About the Role The Senior R&D Engineer will assist with the creation, maintenance, and delivery of a portfolio of R&D projects, for both defence and commercial maritime, that progress towards the vision, support the strategy and have a justified potential to enable growth for Austal and its customers. Working with colleagues, the senior R&D Engineer will pursue funding and partnerships with appropriate external organisations, to complement Austal’s existing products and capabilities, to accelerate the delivery of the R&D portfolio. Key Objectives & Responsibilities Delivery of a portfolio of R&D projects A portfolio of projects is comprised of an appropriate balance of maturity levels, risk and value potential. Projects of strategic value are delivered following a gated process, with technical and commercial risk identified and managed appropriately. Projects within the portfolio are periodically refreshed and tested for relevance against current business requirements. Projects are provided with a smooth and effective transition into the business as they reach appropriate levels of maturity. Engagement with external stakeholders Manage and nurture engagement and collaboration with research institutions, industry groups and external organisations in conjunction with relevant projects. Assist with the building of Austal’s technology profile through networking, relationship building and active participation in relevant programs. Identify and evaluation external technology providers and solutions that may have complementary technologies or capabilities to help realise the R&D vision. Engagement with internal stakeholders Assist with the creation and maintenance on an environment of innovation, ensuring Austal is kept informed of current activities and opportunities. Facilitate the introduction of appropriate technology into the business. Ensure alignment between programs within the portfolio and the activities of internal stakeholders, providing regular feedback and updates. R equired Skills / Experience / Attributes MSc, BEng, BSc or equivalent (in a relevant discipline, i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, etc). 5 years experience in a relevant research, product development or engineering role. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in delivering R&D projects. Project management experience, specifically scope definition, risk assessment, schedule management and delivery of complex projects. Experience working within Defence or within Defence Industry. Demonstrated lateral thinking and analytical skills. Strong, effective communication skills and proven stakeholder management ability. An ability to translate technical and complex topics into concepts appropriate to a non-technical audience. Must be eligible to obtain and uphold a Baseline Security Clearance. Hold a Construction safety induction (white card). Desirable: Experience and knowledge or maritime and defence systems. Experience and working knowledge of data analytics and data science methods. Leadership and management skills. Business financial and commercial acumen. Project Management certification through a professional Project Management Body.
