The Opportunity The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work. At senior levels, Research Projects staff may be involved in providing consulting services, science and technology management and/or industry liaison. The Natural Systems Modelling Group at CSIRO’s Data61 is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge computational models to support relevant stakeholders in government and industry in their efforts to combat natural disasters and climate change. Our mission is to harness the power of data and technology to create models that aid in disaster response, preparedness, adaptation and mitigation. We collaborate closely with a range of relevant stakeholders to design and implement innovative solutions that make a real difference in our communities. As a Lead Scientific Software Engineer, you will guide the technical vision and execution of various scientific platforms, ensuring that our solutions are at the forefront of innovation. In addition to providing technical leadership in helping develop and maintain cutting-edge scientific platforms, you will be instrumental in providing mentorship to junior engineers, ensuring the cohesion of our technical team. Collaborating within cross-functional teams, you will actively participate in the design and implementation of efficient solutions, adhering to DevOps principles and industry best practices. Your duties will include: Apply specialist expertise to solve complex problems within a discipline or across a diverse range of projects. Be responsible for activities such as developing and delivering novel technologies, developing and implementing project plans, analysing, validating and reporting results within the constraints of various project plans. Address ill-defined problems and make critical choices between options that require knowledge of the most recent scientific and/or technological developments or novel methodologies. May lead or coordinate CSIRO’s contribution to collaborative projects involving other organisations. Ensure that client or end-user needs are met and typically have a leading role in the effective transfer of new technology to industry/community. Be accountable for the quality of the results delivered, the alignment of the project activities with the business, research and/or technology directions. Play a key advisory role in decisions concerning scientific and/or technological direction. Act as a trusted advisor and demonstrate creativity to determine and anticipate client or project needs. Identify and adapt quickly to changes in client or project needs and changes in the external environment. Represent the organisation in external scientific or technological forums as required and may establish and lead such forums. Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation. Location: Melbourne, VIC Salary: A $ 121,455 - AU$ 142,321 plus up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure: Specified term of 3 years To be considered you will need: Essential Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed. Please address these essential criteria carefully in cover letter. An undergraduate/postgraduate degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or relevant equivalent experience. A minimum of 5 years of professional industry experience as a software engineer. Demonstrable expert knowledge in several programming languages with a strong preference for C++, Python, Java, JavaScript. Hands-on experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining robust APIs. Expertise in contemporary software development tools and practises: version control, unit testing, automated testing, issue tracking. Advanced problem-solving skills in the context of software engineering with a proven ability to effectively approach complex problems autonomously. Demonstrable ability to lead the design, development, and implementation of scientific software solutions. Demonstrable project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritise, and meet deadlines. Ability and willingness to supervise and provide mentorship to others. An ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team environment comprising of people with skill sets in Software Engineering, UX/UI, Product Development, Computational Modelling and Machine Learning and Climate and Agricultural Science. An ability to communicate effectively to an internal and external audience that may not always be technical in nature.
