Our Innovation & Energy Transition team develops and delivers initiatives to ensure the safe, reliable and secure operation of the NSW power system throughout the energy transition, and with up to 100% renewable supply. We explore how new technologies and innovations can be deployed on the grid, to improve cost, quality and sustainability outcomes for all energy consumers. Our work is varied and creative - there's no rulebook for the energy transition. About the opportunity As the Senior Engineer - Energy Transition you will make creative, technical, and commercial contributions to Transgrid's Network team, supporting the investigation and deployment of technologies and services to enable a reliable and secure power system at up to 100% instantaneous renewables. It's the ideal role if you love combining an expert knowledge of electricity, renewable energy and new technologies with strong communication skills and commercial acumen. You will lead project origination, development and strategic decision making. In this role, the Senior Engineer will: Support the delivery of system security services to keep the grid secure as we transition to renewable energy. You will facilitate power system studies, techno-economic assessments and support market modelling and commercial transactions to procure system security services from new infrastructure such as synchronous condensers and grid forming batteries, or from existing synchronous generators. Engage with market proponents in order to assess non-network solutions, and support commercial negotiations with them. Provide creative guidance to support others in undertaking power system studies for network and non-network solutions, including in PSCAD and PSSE. Support the development and deployment of Transgrid's System Security Roadmap, developing and implementing infrastructure, services, tools and systems to enable the secure operation of our network at up to 100% instantaneous renewable energy. Investigate and trial new technologies and services to provide system security throughout the energy transition, such as synthetic inertia and system strength from grid forming batteries. Liaise with proponents and equipment manufacturers to assess technical capabilities and costs. Prepare business cases and economic justification to support regulatory approvals and capital investment decisions for infrastructure and services required to deliver the energy transition Investigating future power system trends and opportunities, such as distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, renewable energy zones, and assess its implications on the transition of the power system. You will collaborate with our power system engineers to guide modelling and analysis to design solutions to support the evolution of the NSW power system. You will prepare research and thought leadership, and engage with industry stakeholders. Lead Internal and external knowledge sharing and advocacy, by monitoring energy market trends and assessing and resolving novel technical, commercial and regulatory challenges. About you Significant experience in the energy industry, related to electricity systems and new technologies Strong interest in strategic and commercial aspects of delivering new technologies into the electricity system Experience in undertaking (or guiding) power system modelling is optional Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market including rules and regulations A creative and collaborative approach - eager to guide the planning of 'the electricity system of the future' Well-developed analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline, including Engineering and Commerce degrees Effective written and verbal communication with a range of stakeholders including customers, suppliers, contractors, other technical experts and senior management Well-developed people and service management skills Solid understanding of risk management - qualitative and quantitative Recognition & Reward In return for your hard work, we have numerous benefits and initiatives to support you personally and professionally including but not limited to private health insurance discount, motor vehicle lease plan, career development support, study assistance program and workplace flexibility.
