This is our promise to the Victorian community and the reason we exist. $126,852 per annum superannuation Full Time, Fixed Term to 28 June 2024 Medical Panels office, 485 La Trobe St, Melbourne Purpose The Legal Advisor supports Medical Panels to be independent, fair and timely when answering medical questions relating to workers' compensation and personal injury law. They provide legal and policy advice to the Convenor and individual Medical Panels. Key Responsibilities Reviews opinions, determinations and reasons to ensure they meet legislative requirements and timeframes. Advises individual Medical Panels on workers' compensation personal injury law, Wrongs Act referrals, impairment benefit claims, procedural fairness and related issues. Manages their own portfolio of work and makes decisions autonomously while building effective and collegiate working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. Exercises a high degree of sound judgment in the management and review of Medical Panel referrals to ensure the fair, effective and timely resolution of disputes. Contributes to the development and presentation of information sessions and learning materials. Other related duties as directed to meet the ongoing needs of the organisation. About you Skills and experience Minimum of 2 years post-admission experience in personal injury law. Demonstrated technical legal knowledge of the Accident Compensation Act 1985, the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013 and Wrongs Act 1958 as they relate to Medical Panels, medical questions, dispute resolution and referrals to Medical Panels. Technical knowledge of AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (4th Edition). Demonstrated highly developed analytical and conceptual abilities including the ability to detect patterns and similarities in cases in order to advise Medical Panels towards consistent and fair outcomes. Ability to work in a small team within a sensitive environment and subject to close public scrutiny. Excellent communication skills both oral and written including demonstrated superior interpersonal, negotiation and motivational skills. Strong plain English writing skills and technical knowledge of medical terminology. Qualifications Tertiary qualifications in law.
