This role reports to our Chief Engineer and the focus is to undertake mechanical design activities relating to the packaging of screw compressors for refrigeration and mine cooling applications. The role will also provide support and advice to sales/proposals, operations and after-sales in the formulation of technical proposals for screw compressor packages, continuous improvements and the safety culture of our applications. Your key responsibilities will include: - Design innovative technical solutions within agreed timeframes that adhere to Howden standards and meet customer requirements. - Carry out necessary mechanical design calculations to enable initial required project information to be generated for issue to customer for review. - Provide mechanical design engineering support to design draughtsman and other project team functional disciplines throughout detailed design project phase - Communicate any identified technical issues to appropriate project/functional manager and offer practical solutions where available. - Plan and organize own workload to ensure timely availability of purchasing/manufacturing data/drawings - Actively participate in essential design and safety reviews to ensure fitness of purpose of Howden products including consideration for operability, reliability, maintainability, etc. Additionally use such reviews to identify potential improvements of product ideas, resources and design processes. - Lead 3D modelling activities and participate in customer 3D model reviews as required, ensuring that internal processes are standardized and developed as necessary. - Evaluate and provide impartial technical reviews of sub-vendor bids to assist procurement activity. - Ensure all work undertaken considers commercial and financial implications of task from a business perspective - Drive Lean Manufacturing initiatives supporting cost reduction, efficiency, delivery and Quality improvements. - Use Continuous Improvement methodologies to promote Built in Engineering Quality concepts into Standard work. What do you need to bring? It is fundamental that you are of Bachelor's Degree calibre in a Mechanical Engineering discipline or suitable experience backed up by an appropriate engineering qualification. You'll display knowledge of general mechanical design engineering gained in a rotating equipment environment. It is also essential that you are a proficient user of Autodesk Inventor 3D computer-aided design (including Tube & Pipe Environment) and analysis tools. You have the experience to proactively and independently solve problems, think laterally and identify corrective actions. You're comfortable working in an autonomous manner, whilst also being an enthusiastic team player. You display strong stakeholder management capabilities and have the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. The role holder should have the ability to know when to challenge and instigate change to existing procedures and guidelines ensuring they are in a constant state of examination. The role also demands a relentless focus on seeing the job through to completion. The following would also be highly regarded: - Leadership skills - never accept the status quo, relentless focus on improvement. Resilience in the face of resistance and challenge - Excellent technical knowledge of Pressure Vessels and Piping Systems and associated design codes such as ASME B31.3 and ASME VIII. - Knowledge of international standards and specifications such as API 619, API 614 and ASME VIII. - Broad range of communication skills with the ability to liaise with clients, senior management and shop floor personnel. - Knowledge of process gases, hydraulics or pneumatics - Knowledge/experience within industrial refrigeration - Knowledge/experience with the mine cooling industry - Knowledge of Australian standards such as AS1210, AS5149,etc - Ability to create technical reports and make technical presentations - Experience working in lean and continuous improvement environment and of using associated operational excellence and growth tools and processes - Ability to perform design calculations and analyses from 'first principles' - Basic 2D CAD skills - Some knowledge of exotic alloys and non-metals in design applications e.g. elastomers, polymers etc. To express your interest in this position, please send your CV and cover letter by Friday 30th June 2022.
