About the branch The Inquiries, Prosecutions and Administrative Law (IPA) branch of the VGSO comprises a number of legal teams that provide specialist legal services and advice to the State in relation to; Regulation, Administrative Law and Disciplinary Reviews, Inquiries and Royal Commissions. The branch is led by the Assistant Victorian Government Solicitor (IPA) and is supported by approximately 50 employees; solicitors, paralegals and legal support who work within teams. The Administrative and Regulatory Law teams provide litigation services and legal advice in the following areas; investigations and criminal procedure, merits review of administrative decisions and related court proceedings, business and occupational licensing, conduct reviews, professional disciplinary proceedings and summary prosecutions, freedom of information, information sharing and privacy and integrity body inquiries. The Inquiries teams provide specialist legal services and legal advice in relation to Inquiries and Royal Commissions including; the establishment of Royal Commissions (exclusive services), management of notices to produce including document review, witness and hearing preparation, briefing and instructing counsel, State submissions and strategic responses, project management and reporting. At times, the branch also provides litigation legal services on state care, personal injury and negligence claims (including historical institutional abuse claims involving former minors and young persons in the care of the State). About the role An exciting opportunity exists for an eager and dedicated Legal Assistant to join our Inquiries, Prosecutions and Administrative Law Branch. This role will provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to a team of solicitors. This role would ideally be suited to someone looking to build on their existing legal secretary experience and create a career in this field. Day to day responsibilities include: Preparing, formatting and reviewing legal documentation, including correspondence and court documents Liaising with barristers clerks and preparing briefs for counsel including collation of e-briefs Filing and service of court documents via online platforms Autonomous file management - conduct of matter related tasks, monthly billing and maintaining efficient and effective electronic files Calendar and mailbox management General administration duties This role will provide you with the opportunity to take ownership and build a long-term career with great development and progression opportunities.
