Welcome to Northern Peninsula Area State College We are a remote Indigenous community college catering to the education needs of students from the five communities of Bamaga, Injinoo, Umagico, New Mapoon and Seisia, as well as the neighbouring islands in the Torres Strait including Saibai and Badu. Our college has three campuses each with strong links to the Torres Strait; Bamaga Junior and Injinoo for our Pre-Prep to Year Six students, and Bamaga Senior for our Year Seven to Twelve students as well as mature aged learners wishing to undertake a career change. Bamaga, located on the Jardine River 850km north-west of Cairns, is the unofficial capital of the NPA region. Today Bamaga is home to approximately 1050 people of whom more that 80% identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. The main language spoken in Bamaga is Torres Strait Creole, although Kala Kawa Ya and English are also spoken. Access to Bamaga is by road or air. A 4WD is definitely recommended if you are driving yourself, or plan on getting acquainted with the local area on weekends and holidays. Local amenities in Bamaga include hospital and community health services, sporting facilities, airport, IBIS store, grocery stores and tourist accommodation.
