Bamaga, located on the Jardine River 850km north-west of Cairns, is the unofficial capital of the NPA region. Today Bamaga is home to approximately 1050 people of whom more that 80% identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. The main language spoken in Bamaga is Torres Strait Creole, although Kala Kawa Ya and English are also spoken. Access to Bamaga is by road or air. A 4WD is definitely recommended if you are driving yourself, or plan on getting acquainted with the local area on weekends and holidays.
