The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to recruit several Cloud Engineers to work in our Technology and Security Division.These are ongoing, permanent positions at the APS 6 and Executive Level 1 classification levels. Successful applicants can work either full-time or part-time hours out of our offices located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra (Belconnen), Hobart, Melbourne (Docklands), Perth and Sydney, although a hybrid model of working from home and in the office applies.About the business areaThe Technology and Security Division is responsible for the technical infrastructure and applications that drive the work of the ABS. The team is responsible for the design, implementation, administration and maintenance of ABS’ applications, middleware, cloud and premise-based infrastructure. The Division is also responsible for the delivery of the Big Data, Timely Insights Phase 2 (BDTI2) Program. This transformation program includes the critical next steps in the ABS’ 10-year ICT modernisation plan. It is focused on moving significant parts of our data and statistics business to the ABS’ new cloud analytics environment and using this new environment to produce new insights like a complete, monthly measure of the Consumer Price Index. This program will see the ABS build and deploy exciting new data tools that will deliver significant benefits to the ABS and the Australian community over the next four years. The Division also supports the cloud infrastructure and solutions that underpin the ABS’s Data Integration capability. This ultimately gives researchers and policy analysts access to detailed microdata to gain insights into areas of important government policy. Microdata is enhanced by the ABS through statistical data linking and protected through deidentification and protections to avoid reidentification risks. What we are looking for (selection criteria)These roles will suit passionate ICT professionals wanting to contribute to the ongoing development, support and uplift of ABS technology solutions.A Cloud Engineer is responsible for the development, maintenance, and support of the ABS’s public cloud infrastructure and systems. By designing, developing and leveraging engineering tools and processes they effectively provision, install, configure and operate public cloud services, as well as provide expert advice and support for cloud systems in collaboration with broader development teams. They may also participate in a 24x7 on-call roster to provide out-of-hours support and perform overtime as per operational requirements.To be considered for a Cloud Engineer position, you will need most, or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:demonstrated experience in cloud system and service operations and maintenance, including implementing end-to-end solutions that incorporate process, technology and security elements, by working with native cloud services and leveraging automation toolsa proven ability to work with multiple stakeholders and multi-disciplinary teams by fostering positive working relationships using well-developed communication skillsability to document and communicate conceptual, logical, and physical designs to technical and non-technical audiencesdemonstrated experience in Amazon Web Services and/or Microsoft Azure public cloud platforms, services and supporting technologies including but not limited to:o Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, AWS Cloud Development Kit, Bicep & ARM),o Orchestration and Automation (Lambda, Step Functions, Glue),o DevOps Tools (JIRA, Gitlab, AWS CodeCommit/Build/Deploy/Pipeline, Azure DevOps),o Data Lake Methodology (AWS Lake Formation) or familiarity with managing and configuring Azure Data Services (Synapse, Purview), ando Coding Languages (R and/or Python and/or SQL, JavaScript/Typescript, PowerShell).To be considered for an EL 1 Cloud Engineer position you will need significant cloud systems engineering experience and/or technical leadership in an enterprise context.
