The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 600,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian. A new role awaits We are looking for highly motivated professionals with legal experience to join the NDIA as APS6 Lawyers. We have multiple vacancies within the NDIA’s Legal Services Branch, in the Chief Counsel Division. The division is the Agency’s in-house legal practice servicing the whole of the Agency. The Legal Services Branch consists of five key teams that support business areas with legal advice and support services on areas of law including:• Corporate and Commercial: contracts and grant agreements, public interest disclosures, employment law, property, work health & safety, intellectual property, probity and commercial dispute resolution.• General Advice and Legislation: strategic legal advice, assurance and support on all aspects of the implementation and operation of the NDIS across Australia including the application and interpretation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (NDIS Act) and subordinate legislation.• Releases and Resolution: coronial matters, civil litigation matters, managing requests for protected Agency information from justice related stakeholders (e.g., police, child protection agencies, public guardians, courts, tribunals and lawyers) where it is not possible or practicable to obtain consent from the person the information is about.• Information Law and Privacy: legal advice or assistance relating to the use, collection, disclosure or handling of personal information, sharing personal information with third parties or complying with the NDIA's information handling obligations and integrity matters.• Additionally, the Fraud Fusion Taskforce (FFT) has been established to detect and prevent fraud in the NDIS and to strengthen the Commonwealth’s fraud detection and response capability. The FFT coordinates intelligence sharing, identification and response by the NDIA and its partner agencies, including law enforcement and regulators. The Legal Services Branch will be working closely with the FFT to provide legal advice, assurance, and support services to ensure integrity matters are conducted in accordance with relevant legislation. Common issues requiring legal assistance include general support to criminal investigations, advice on claims for legal professional privilege on seized material and legal support to the governance of the FFT. Where you can add value In this role as an APS6 Lawyer you will provide leadership support to your team as well as to executives and business areas. Bring your knowledge and experience in establishing and maintain excellent working relationships with clients and other stakeholders including courts and tribunals, other government agencies, states and territories, the legal profession, and people with disability and their representatives.Responsibilities of this role may include: Providing legal advice to the executive and business areas. Managing the priorities of clients and available resources to deliver results on time and within budget. Establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships with clients and other stakeholders including courts and tribunals, other government agencies, states and territories, the legal profession, and people with disability and their representatives. Preparing and undertaking initial research and advice on medium level risk matters to contribute to a range of material including briefing material for Ministers, board papers, media releases, reports to Parliamentary committees, intranet and website content and correspondence. Contributing to business improvement activities, including the development of systems, processes and practical tools. Drafting advice on straightforward legal matters, managing a caseload of matters and advising with the support of senior lawyers including Principal Lawyers, Deputy Chief Counsel and Chief Counsel. Undertaking preliminary work to support senior lawyers including Principal Lawyers, Deputy Chief Counsel and Chief Counsel in advising in moderately complex legal matters Enough about us, let’s talk about you Our ideal candidate will have the ability to work in multiple areas of law, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and will develop productive relationships with stakeholders both internal and external to the Agency. While this role is ideally performed from ACT-Braddon, NSW-Surry Hills, QLD – Brisbane, SA-Adelaide, VIC-Geelong & Richmond, remote working arrangements may be considered. We intend to fill this role in an ongoing capacity, however non-ongoing roles up to 18 months may be offered.
