Your Opportunity Our client is a leading Australian-owned automation systems integrator delivering innovative automation and engineered solutions across the Food & Beverage, FMCG, Packaging, Manufacturing and Industrial sectors. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Melbourne engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on bespoke machinery, production equipment and automation projects, taking concepts from initial client discussions through detailed design, manufacture, assembly and final installation. This is far more than a traditional design role. You'll be responsible for developing innovative mechanical solutions that are practical, commercially viable and designed to meet each client's operational and budget requirements. Working closely with electrical engineers, PLC programmers, project managers and fabrication teams, you'll play a key role throughout the complete project lifecycle. Key Responsibilities Design custom machinery, automation equipment and mechanical systems from concept through to fabrication and commissioning. Produce high-quality 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks. Work closely with clients to understand operational requirements and translate these into practical engineering solutions. Liaise with workshop, fabrication and manufacturing teams throughout the build process. Conduct design reviews and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs), fabrication drawings & technical documentation. About You You are an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys solving challenging engineering problems and seeing your designs come to life. You thrive in a project-based environment where every solution is different, combining technical expertise with creativity to produce practical, cost-effective outcomes. To be successful you will have: Proven experience designing custom machinery, automation equipment or industrial mechanical systems. Advanced proficiency using Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks. Experience taking projects from initial concept through detailed design, fabrication and commissioning. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication, machining and assembly. Ability to balance technical excellence with commercial considerations, delivering projects within client budgets.
