Position Summary The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and improving custom fabrication solutions, mechanical equipment and structural assemblies to meet client specifications. The role involves taking projects from concept through detailed design, manufacturing support, installation and commissioning while ensuring compliance with Australian Standards and engineering best practices. Key Duties and Responsibilities Design mechanical components, fabricated structures and equipment using 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD). Prepare detailed engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings and bills of materials (BOMs). Develop design concepts based on customer requirements, technical specifications and project objectives. Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis and material selection to ensure product performance and safety. Liaise with clients to clarify technical requirements and provide engineering solutions. Work closely with fabrication, machining and welding teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable. Conduct design reviews and implement improvements based on production feedback. Ensure compliance with relevant Australian Standards, engineering codes and workplace safety requirements. Support procurement by specifying materials, components and manufacturing requirements. Assist during prototype development, testing, installation and commissioning of fabricated products. Investigate engineering issues and provide technical solutions to improve quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Maintain engineering documentation, revision control and technical records throughout the project lifecycle. Coordinate with project managers to ensure projects are completed within budget and scheduled timeframes. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimise manufacturing processes and product performance. Skills and Knowledge Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and fabrication processes. Experience in sheet metal design, structural steel design and welded assemblies. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor or AutoCAD. Knowledge of Australian Standards relating to mechanical design and fabrication. Understanding of manufacturing methods including CNC machining, laser cutting, bending, welding and assembly. Ability to perform engineering calculations and prepare technical documentation. Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Relevant industry experience in mechanical design, manufacturing or fabrication engineering.
