This role calls for a genuine expert in mobile app development — someone who has spent the last 5 years immersed in building and owning Android mobile solutions in a retail environment , and brings 10 years of broader technology experience to back it up. This is a hands-on role sitting within a tight-knit team of around 15 talented technology specialists. We are looking for only the best. About the Role As a Mobile App Engineer at 4WD Supacentre, you’ll take ownership of evolving and enhancing our custom-built Android mobile application — a core tool used daily by our in-store teams to drive sales through a guided, customer-first point-of-sale experience. This is a hands-on, technical role working within a fast-moving team that values delivery and innovation in equal measure. Reporting to the Technology & Project Director. We are on an exciting journey to embed AI capabilities directly into our retail mobile app — leveraging customer data, purchase history and in-store behaviour to intelligently surface upsell and cross-sell opportunities, equip our sales staff with real-time product knowledge, and deliver a more personalised experience at the point of sale. You’ll work closely with our retail, ecommerce and data teams to understand what our staff and customers need, then build it. In flight already is a mobile app to empower our retail team with products, pricing, stock, and customer integrations and POS integration. The next phase awaits to hit the roadmap at pace building on features, journeys, AI integrations and technology integrations. The role is not limited to the retail sales app, we are also expanding other custom technology solutions, and therefore there will be room to grow and mould within this role as our team expands with the company. Role Responsibilities Own the end-to-end development, enhancement and maintenance of the 4WD Supacentre custom Android mobile application used across retail stores Embed AI-driven capabilities into the app to intelligently surface upsell and cross-sell opportunities at the point of sale in real time Leverage customer data, purchase history and behaviour to equip in-store sales staff with personalised product recommendations and insights Design and implement guided sales workflows and processes within the app that help staff deliver a consistent, high-quality customer experience Integrate the mobile app with core business systems including POS, CRM, inventory and ecommerce platforms Evaluate and recommend AI tooling, frameworks and libraries best suited to enhance the mobile retail experience Define and monitor key performance metrics for AI features within the app — including uplift in average order value, conversion and attachment rate Collaborate with retail operations, ecommerce and data teams to ensure app capabilities align with business and customer needs Maintain a high standard of code quality, performance and security across the mobile application Document technical designs, integration architectures and release notes Stay current with advancements in Android development, on-device AI and generative AI and apply them where relevant Integration of payment systems within the app including on-device tap-to-pay Support QA and user acceptance testing of new features prior to in-store rollout Contribute to the broader AI transformation roadmap across the business About you You are a technically sharp and commercially aware mobile engineer who gets genuine satisfaction from seeing a well-built app make a real difference on the shop floor. You have hands-on experience building and owning Android mobile applications in a large multi-store retail environment in Australia — and you know what it takes to build something that works reliably in the hands of busy sales staff, day in and day out. You are deeply skilled in mobile app development and have successfully delivered at scale , multiple times. You understand the nuance of building guided sales and point-of-sale experiences , and you’re excited by the opportunity to layer AI on top of that — using customer data, purchase history and real-time signals to help staff sell smarter and serve better. You’ll Bring: Proven hands-on experience designing, building and owning Android mobile applications in a retail or point-of-sale environment Deep knowledge of Android development frameworks Experience with Modern AI-First Development Platforms for mobile devices Experience embedding AI and machine learning capabilities into mobile applications — including recommendation engines, personalisation and predictive features Strong understanding of how to leverage customer data, purchase history and behavioural signals to drive intelligent in-app experiences Experience integrating mobile apps with core business systems via APIs — including POS, CRM, inventory and ecommerce platforms Proficiency with APIs and integration patterns (REST, webhooks, GraphQL) to connect mobile apps with back-end systems and data sources Familiarity with large language models (LLMs) and generative AI and how they can be applied within a mobile retail context Experience defining and tracking mobile app performance metrics and iterating based on data and user feedback Strong documentation skills — able to produce clear technical specifications, integration designs and release documentation Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders including retail operations teams Strong documentation skills — able to produce clear technical and functional specifications Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders Required Skills and Qualifications: 5 years of hands-on Android mobile app development experience (non-negotiable) Demonstrated end-to-end delivery of mobile applications in a commercial retail or point-of-sale environment 5 years working in a retailer / ecommerce environment in Australia Experience working in a retail or ecommerce business in Australia Strong proficiency with cloud platforms — AWS or Google Cloud Strong proficiency in Agile, Scrum or hybrid delivery methodologies Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology Beneficial Skills and Qualifications (but not essential): Experience with iOS development in addition to Android Familiarity with on-device AI and edge inference frameworks Exposure to UX/UI design principles for retail or sales-focused applications Experience with integration platforms such as Workato Experience working in a business with their own distribution centres / warehouses Experience with SAP, Salesforce, UKG, Magento, Shopify Hands-on experience with Salesforce Service Cloud Agile or Scrum Master certification Experience working with third-party vendors and managing external delivery partners What’s in it for you?
