OVIC The Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC) is an independent regulator with combined oversight of information access, information privacy, and data protection. About the role OVIC provides independent oversight of the Victorian public sector's collection, use and disclosure of public sector information. Our functions are set out in the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (PDP Act). As a Project Officer - Legal you will primarily have conduct of a caseload of matters under the FOI Act, including * researching and preparing draft legal advice ranging in complexity to assist with the progress of FOI matters * liaising directly with individual applicants, government bodies and others in the conduct and management of FOI matters * drafting preliminary views and final decisions for decision-makers * explaining your opinions and reasoning to internal stakeholders and decision-makers * developing an understanding of how different government departments and agencies operate, and gain knowledge and understanding of a wide range of different legislation * contributing to the development of policies and guidelines (where required) * participating in education, mentoring and support opportunities offered by OVIC. This role is ideal for an individual who has recently graduated from, or is studying a legal qualification. The ability to undertake statutory interpretation, understand and apply case law and understand administrative law requirements is necessary. The Project Officer - Legal requires strong problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills, with the confidence to manage competing priorities and stakeholders, while maintaining attention to detail. Well-developed research and writing skills, and the ability to prepare clear correspondence and written reports together with effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues will provide the Project Officer - Legal with the skills to succeed in this opportunity.
