Your responsibilities:- Provide superior level strategic, independent and professional legal advice and documentation to all levels of the department with a focus on commercial and public law matters. This may include contract, intellectual property, workplace and employment issues, regulatory compliance, disputes, right to information and privacy matters.- Ensure contemporary legal issues are identified and applied effectively when advising on government policies and initiatives.- Facilitate and manage development of efficient and effective policy and legislative frameworks for the department.- Facilitate and manage projects in a range of research, policy development, legislative development and evaluation activities, in accordance with best practice.- Develop professional and positive working relationships with internal stakeholders across the department and external stakeholders such as Crown Law and legal panel firms. What we are looking for:- Ability to provide high level, strategic, independent and professional legal advice and documentation to executive officers across the department about complex and sensitive commercial law matters.- Capacity to successfully manage legal projects within agreed timeframes and requirements.- Highly developed research, negotiation and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to successfully communicate in both oral and written forms and to network and consult across all levels of government and industry.- Comprehensive understanding, or ability to quickly acquire, of the issues and emerging trends relevant to the department and the implications of these for government legal practice in relation to commercial law matters.- Ability to work in a dynamic team, with a willingness to be involved in a broad range of matters, to support team members and the work of the department more broadly.- Prior government experience is not essential. We are open to candidates with broad commercial law experience, ideally obtained in a private law firm.
