The key duties of the position include Our team The Data Policy and Informatics section within the Digital Science and Information branch creates, implements, and promotes policies, platforms and tools that improve and support the quality, discoverability, accessibility, and general usability of Geoscience Australia's science data products. The section consults with internal and external research, government and industry partners to establish collaborative data frameworks, architectures and models within Geoscience Australia (GA) and across broader national and international communities of practice. The section innovates, builds and maintains tools, systems, processes and governance that enable digital data management, cataloguing and open data delivery. We currently have an opportunity for a Java Data Engineer in the Data Policy and Informatics section. The role The Data Engineer works within the Informatics team to implement and maintain the enterprise catalogue of Geoscience Australia. The enterprise catalogue implements the Geoscience Australia metadata profile based on ISO 19115-3 metadata standard. The Data Engineer reports to the Iteration Manager and is part of an Agile multi-disciplinary team. They work closely with other developers, data scientists and engineers within the Digital Science and Information (DiSI) branch, as well as diverse stakeholders both within and external to GA. In this role you will: Implement enhancements to the enterprise catalogue based on GeoNetwork Design and implement the cloud deployment using infrastructure as Code. Help to design and implement data infrastructure to support best practice in data management, usage and publication at GA. Contribute to discussions, sprints, daily stand-ups and other team-based activities. Interact and communicate effectively and positively with management, peers, service providers and clients. Participate in quality maintenance practices such as code reviews and walk-throughs. To be successful in this role, you will: Have a passion for data and continuous improvement. Identify problems and assess their significance; take appropriate action to resolve them; explore various possibilities and generate innovative alternatives. Deal positively with uncertainty and cope effectively in an environment characterised by change. Have excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse cross-section of internal and external stakeholders. Be a motivated self-starter with the ability to prioritise activities with minimal supervision. Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications Strong software development skills in Java and AngularJS Experience with PostgreSQL or similar databases. Excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse cross-section of internal and external stakeholders. Proven ability to take personal responsibility for progressing work, meeting milestones and delivering results as part of an Agile multidisciplinary team (MDT). Familiar with modern software development techniques, such as Test/Behaviour Driven Development and CI/CD Pipelines The following skills are not mandatory but will be highly regarded: Cloud deployment experience in AWS Experience with GeoNetwork.
