About the role adaptbl legal is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Officer with 3 years’ PAE for our client, a Commonwealth government department based in Canberra CBD. The successful candidate will be a part of a team which provides litigation strategy and dispute resolution support in the handling of complex and sensitive matters, across a range of internal and external stakeholders to manage legal risk for the department. An initial labour hire contract until 30th June 2025 is on offer, with prospects of extension. This is a full-time role, but flexible working arrangements including remote and part-time work will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please note: only Australian citizens with the ability to obtain/maintain a Baseline security clearance can be considered for this role. Duties Manage a range of matters from judicial review matters, through to class actions the AAT matters. Manage all steps in the litigation process, such as reviewing submissions, arranging witness affidavits, and assisting with discovery. Ensure compliance with LSD obligations. Collaborate with external law firms and various Commonwealth entities. Regularly brief internal clients, including the Executive and Minister’s Office. Manage subpoenas on behalf of the department. Essential qualifications: A degree in law from an Australian university, or a comparable overseas degree which is recognised in Australia for admission to practise. Practising certificate or eligibility to attain one. Requisite skills/experience: Minimum three years’ PAE and demonstrated experience in litigation. Clear communication skills. Strong stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to work both in a team environment and independently.
