AI/ML Engineer — Mangerton, Wollongong Area

Description We’re seeking a driven and experienced AI/ML Engineer to help drive the integration of Artificial Intelligence into our SaaS platform for professional services. This is a critical role that will shape how AI delivers meaningful value to our users - enabling smarter workflows, insightful automation, and a competitive edge. In this role, you’ll design and build intelligent systems that match the right resources to the right tasks, generate optimised schedules, and summarise project statuses using the latest in applied machine learning and large language models. The ideal candidate is comfortable navigating both the science and the engineering required to deliver reliable, production-grade AI solutions that make a real impact. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and deploy ML models for real-world SaaS features, such as forecasting, smart scheduling, and recommendation systems. Design, implement, and optimise solutions leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) from providers such as OpenAI, Hugging Face, and Anthropic, incorporating advanced capabilities including additional training, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and reasoning. Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and design teams to identify opportunities to embed ML into the product experience. Build robust data pipelines (ETL/ELT), ensuring high-quality data availability for modeling and analytics. Evaluate and optimise model performance to ensure transparency, fairness, and trust in AI-driven features, while adhering to budgetary constraints. Lead the development of MLOps workflows for versioning, deployment, monitoring, and retraining of production models. Translate ambiguous product problems into well-defined ML problems with measurable success metrics. Communicate insights and technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Mentor engineers to strengthen their skills in AI/ML development, deployment, and best practices. Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, or related field. 3–5 years of experience in ML or data science roles, preferably in a SaaS or technology environment. Demonstrated success shipping ML features in production environments. Skills & Experience Core AI/ML Expertise: Proficiency with ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Scikit-learn. Strong experience with supervised and unsupervised learning, NLP, and time-series forecasting. Hands-on experience deploying LLMs for real-world applications, including fine-tuning, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), reasoning, and Mixture of Experts techniques. Familiarity with prompt engineering, chaining methods, and higher-level orchestration frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex. Understanding of multimodal learning, integrating diverse data types (e.g., text, images, audio) to enhance model performance. Product-Oriented Thinking: Experience integrating ML into user-facing SaaS features. Ability to frame business and user problems as ML problems. Deep understanding of user experience considerations such as explainability, latency, and trust. Data Infrastructure & MLOps: Proficient in working with production-grade data pipelines (SQL/NoSQL, ETL/ELT, data lakes). Experience with ML model deployment using tools like Docker, FastAPI, and cloud platforms (AWS or GCP). Familiarity with MLOps tools such as MLflow, Airflow, n8n, or Feature Stores. Collaboration & Communication: Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; comfortable working with product managers, designers, and engineers. Effective communicator, capable of explaining technical concepts to a variety of audiences. Agile mindset with a willingness to prototype, test, and iterate based on user feedback. Bonus Skills: Knowledge of the Professional Services Automation domain or related verticals (e.g., project management, time tracking). Experience with RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) or vector search for intelligent document Q&A. Background in optimization or recommendation algorithms (e.g., prioritization, resource allocation).
