About the Role Our client is a leading national engineering consultancy with an impressive pipeline of education, aviation, commercial, tertiary, and industrial projects across Australia. They’re seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (6 years’ experience) to join their Melbourne office. You’ll spearhead mechanical building services design on medium-scale developments—driving innovation, mentoring a growing team, and ensuring the delivery of world‐class HVAC solutions. Key Responsibilities Lead mechanical design from concept through to construction for major projects (e.g., university campuses, airport terminals, large commercial fit-outs, and industrial facilities). Oversee detailed HVAC system design (chilled water, VRF, air‐handling units, ductwork) Produce and review comprehensive design documentation: schematic layouts, detailed Revit MEP models, specifications, and advanced design calculations using IES VE, Tas, HAP, or similar tools. Conduct and supervise site inspections to verify as‐built conditions, lead site‐based problem solving, and update designs in real time; liaise with contractors and subconsultants to resolve on‐site mechanical challenges. Engage directly with clients: facilitate workshops, present mechanical design concepts, negotiate scope changes, and build long‐term relationships with key stakeholders such as developers, architects, and facility managers. Mentor, coach, and develop mid‐ and junior‐level mechanical engineers and CAD technicians—establish QA/QC procedures, review their work for compliance with Australian Standards, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Champion innovation in energy efficiency and sustainability: perform energy modelling, recommend low‐carbon solutions (e.g., high‑efficiency chillers, demand‐control ventilation, thermal storage), and support NABERS, Green Star, or IS rating submissions. Lead value‑engineering initiatives—identify cost‐effective, high‑performance mechanical solutions without compromising design integrity or regulatory compliance. Manage project budgets, resource allocation, and schedules—coordinate with project managers and directors to ensure on‑time, on‑budget delivery of mechanical packages. What You’ll Bring Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent). 6 years of progressive mechanical building services consulting experience, with a track record leading projects Deep understanding of Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3666, AS 1668, AS/NZS 1682, AS/NZS 3661, AS/NZS 3661.1−1974, etc.) related to HVAC, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, fire dampers, and energy efficiency. Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) accreditation—or actively working toward—preferred. Exceptional leadership skills: proven ability to manage a multidisciplinary mechanical team, mentor junior staff, and guide technical decision‑making. Excellent verbal and written communication skills—comfortable presenting complex mechanical concepts to clients, stakeholders, and non‑technical audiences. Demonstrated capability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize tasks under tight deadlines, and drive results in a fast‑paced consultancy environment. Passion for sustainable design: hands‑on experience with energy modelling, lifecycle costing, renewable integration (e.g., solar hot water, heat recovery), and achieving Green Star/NABERS benchmarks.
