Position: Retail Buyer – Opal Jewellery Position Type : Full-Time Salary: $70,000 to $80,000 plus superannuation per annum Location: Lightning Ridge NSW 2834 Our client is seeking a highly experienced Retail Buyer to manage the procurement, merchandising, and stock strategy for our specialised opal jewellery store . This role plays a critical function in maintaining our premium offering by sourcing high-quality opals from Australia’s most iconic opal mining regions — Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy, and Queensland —and curating collections that meet market demand and uphold our brand’s reputation. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Monitor stock levels and analyse sales trends to determine purchasing needs. Research market conditions and consumer preferences using trade publications, supplier data, and industry insights specific to opal and gemstone retail. Source opals directly from reputable mines in Lightning Ridge (NSW), Coober Pedy (SA), and various regions in Queensland . Negotiate purchase terms, pricing, supply volumes, and promotional offers with opal miners, gemstone traders, and jewellery manufacturers. Determine the appropriate quantity, style, and quality of goods to be purchased in accordance with consumer demand, seasonal requirements, and store budget. Plan and implement efficient purchasing strategies aligned with store targets and industry trends. Coordinate marketing campaigns, in-store displays, and promotional activities in collaboration with the marketing team. Prepare and deliver reports on purchasing performance, supplier performance, and market forecasts. Requirements: Minimum ten (10) years of experience in retail buying, preferably in the jewellery, gemstone sector. Deep understanding of gemstone procurement, especially Australian opals, and the retail jewellery market. Proven ability to negotiate with suppliers and manage complex purchasing operations. Strong commercial acumen, attention to detail, and trend awareness. Excellent communication, inventory management, and strategic planning skills.
