Design Manager — The Rocks, Sydney

We are a fast-moving business and this is an exciting opportunity for a qualified and experienced Design Manager to join our team on a full-time basis in Sydney. The Role As the Design Manager you will take responsibility and manage all design related activities to contribute to the successful delivery of projects. You will proactively bring together internal teams, architects & interior designers, structural and service engineers, along with specialist designers and consultants, to create coordinated designs which can be used during the construction process. Most of the projects that Hunter Mason deliver are within commercial workplaces, however we also deliver projects across hospitality, retail, education and government sectors using various procurement methods. Depending on project scope, it will determine the level of involvement needed on each project, so you will need to be confident and knowledgeable within different processes (i.e DC, Lump Sum, ECI etc). In this role you will be involved across three phases; tender/opportunities, pre-construction and construction. Key responsibilities of the role include, but not limited to: • Responsibility for all day to day inputs and management of design • Internal and external stakeholder management with the ability to be able to pull the project team together (including designers, consultants, architects, clients etc) • Driving all design outcomes to meet the project programme • Act as the conduit between the design team and the subcontractors • Working closely with the project managers internally to ensure successful project outcomes • Review design drawings at each phase of the project (tender, for construction, etc) to ascertain potential omissions, errors, or risks • Managing design changes throughout the project lifecycle • Leading value engineering opportunity workshops • Identifying design risks and managing mitigation strategies accordingly • Review tender document packages from consultants to ensure compliance with Australian Standards & Building Code of Australia • Participation and Involvement in selection process of design team during the tender submissions • Design engineering: identify complex design problems, conduct root-cause failure analysis, and anticipate production issues and be able to develop innovative design solutions, evaluate options, conduct tests, and implement solutions to meet timing, product cost and reliability targets. • Understand and manage the design risk requirement for all Hunter Mason DC contracts, from tender to completion • Conduct design and buildability reviews • Participation in project kick off meetings • Lead and chair design coordination meetings and workshops • Attend site visits to oversee quality of delivery to confirm alignment with the design brief, project aspirations as well as design evolution • Be up to date with all relevant building Legislation, Codes and Standards and help educate and advise the team accordingly • Lead internal Defect Review prior to project handover and consultant defects walk through. Establish Design Defects Log in Procore. • Aligning client expectation and objectives through delivery whilst building trust and confidence in Hunter Mason wholistically • Coordination and attendance of any supplier inspections and review of samples and prototype to derive client sign offs and progress design resolution To be successful in this role: • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (Master's degree preferred) • Experience working across fit out/refurbishment projects • You will have a strong understanding of Australian Standards and building codes • High level of understanding of different procurement methods • Be able to challenge and offer workshop solutions for the best outcome of projects • Be adaptable and collaborative in your approach and be able to work in a fast paced/high pressure environment • Lead with best practice approach to all design activities • Understanding of sustainability including all sustainability tools like GreenStar, NABERS & WELL ratings • Strong communicator who can effectively manage complex stakeholder groups • Specific systems/software experience including CAD and InDesign Next Steps: To find out more about this role, please hit apply and attach your CV and Cover Letter.
