We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Data Engineer on a 12-month contract to help build the foundations of our asset information ecosystem. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on structure, enjoys solving data challenges, and wants to contribute to the reliability and performance of Victoria’s rail network. About the role As a Data Engineer in the Asset Systems & Data team, you’ll focus on developing and maintaining asset data structures, addressing data gaps in systems like JDE, and establishing governance standards that support long-term data integrity. You’ll work closely with stakeholders across the business to align requirements, streamline efforts, and ensure consistency in how asset data is captured and used. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex data challenges, collaborating with stakeholders, and contributing to the performance and reliability of critical infrastructure. Key accountabilities include: Build and maintain hierarchical asset data structures Identify and resolve missing or inconsistent data in ERP systems (e.g., JDE) Develop specification documents and contribute to data governance frameworks Create interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI or custom apps Collaborate with teams to ensure data consistency and avoid duplication Participate in stakeholder workshops to refine data requirements Support the integration of asset data into broader system architecture Document workflows and contribute to process improvement initiatives Present data in clear, user-friendly formats to support decision-making About you You’re a systems thinker with a passion for clean, structured data. You enjoy working with others to solve complex problems and are confident navigating both technical tools and stakeholder conversations. Your ability to translate business needs into data solutions makes you a trusted partner across teams. Our ideal candidate will possess the following: Experience with ERP systems such as JDE Proficiency in Power BI and familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform tools Strong understanding of data modelling, documentation, and system integration Ability to create engaging, interactive reports and dashboards A current driver’s licence (site visits required; pool vehicles available) Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset Familiarity with data governance and system architecture Demonstrated alignment with V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.
