The role Are you passionate about technology and thrive in a dynamic work environment? Nous has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to join our IT team. This permanent, full-time position offers the flexibility of a hybrid working model, including time in our state-of-the-art office at Melbourne Quarter on Collins St – a space designed to inspire innovation and collaboration. As Lead Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for the secure, reliable, and scalable delivery of Nous’ core infrastructure services. This role is deeply technical, yet strategically focused—leading infrastructure initiatives with a security-first mindset, particularly as we support clients in regulated sectors. You will drive tenant consolidation, modern device rollout (Windows 11 via Autopilot), Microsoft 365 optimisation, and the redesign of WAN architecture to support our hybrid operating model. This is a hands-on role, critical to maintaining operational excellence and security integrity across the organisation. The role: Infrastructure Design and Implementation Lead the design, delivery, and ongoing refinement of scalable hybrid infrastructure solutions. Architect and maintain secure hybrid directory environments (Active Directory and Entra ID). Oversee enterprise-wide projects including: Windows 11 Autopilot deployment Azure tenant consolidation and administration WAN architecture redesign and implementation Establish clear documentation, configuration standards, and governance practices. Microsoft 365 & Identity Management Lead administration and optimisation of Microsoft 365 services across a distributed workforce. Manage Entra ID (Azure AD), Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Defender Suite. Support and lead Microsoft 365 tenant mergers, ensuring secure and seamless transitions. Security & Compliance Leadership Embed security-first principles across infrastructure and endpoint design. Partner with the Information Security team to implement proactive controls for identity, access, device compliance, and data protection. Oversee operational excellence across backups, failover procedures, and disaster recovery testing. Lead regular assessments of platform hardening, patch management, and zero trust principles. Ensure alignment with industry frameworks such as Essential Eight, ISO 27001, and NIST. Operations & Continuous Improvement Monitor infrastructure health, performance, and capacity—using automation to reduce reactive work. Drive improvement initiatives across backup, DR, observability, and platform resilience. Translate business needs into technical solutions, balancing security, agility, and cost. Troubleshooting and Support Provide advanced troubleshooting and support for hardware and software issues. Work closely with IT support teams to resolve escalated issues and provide technical guidance. Coordinate with external vendors and service providers for support and incident resolution. You are: A person with exceptional attention to detail and thorough in approach Passionate about technology and jumping in to learn how systems work, and solve problems An exceptional communicator, both written and verbally Able to understand the business problem/intent and think beyond the technical A bit about you: 8-10 years in infrastructure engineering or IT operations roles. Proven experience leading complex projects. Strong technical knowledge and experience in networking and modern network fabric design and management within a multi-office global environment Strong technical knowledge in Microsoft services, including Azure compute and storage, Entra, Exchange, Intune, Teams, Defender and others Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft/Azure certs, ITIL, PMP) are a plus. Demonstrated success operating within or adjacent to public sector security standards.
