Your opportunity: Our rapidly growing Digital & Information Group is expanding, and we are seeking an Emerging Technology Engineer to join our newly established Digital Utility team. The Digital & Information group is responsible for digitally enabling Urban Utilities today while transforming our future capabilities to enhance digital services for our customers, community, and people. We drive Urban Utilities’ digital & data strategy, oversee the digital portfolio, and manage IT, OT, data, IoT, security, infrastructure, system administration, network operations, and support services. As an Emerging Technology Engineer, you'll provide expert consultation, technical support, and process management within our new Emerging Technology and Innovation team. Reporting to the Lead, you'll ensure the team's technical delivery and quality standards are met effectively. Key Responsibilities: Provide high-level technical support and manage complex scenarios. Coach team members and assist with 1st and 2nd level technical issues. Implement best practices and optimise processes. Run service management functions like knowledge, problem, change, and service catalogue management. Collaborate on release, deployment, and capacity management. Identify and mitigate operational risks, ensure compliance, and drive continuous improvement. Align work with KPI targets and maintain quality in communications and documentation. About you: Skills and experience Data Engineering: Extensive experience with data engineering, including data manipulation and using APIs. Software Development: Proficiency in software development/scripting (e.g., Python, Bash) to support quick Proof of Concepts (PoCs). AI concepts: A strong foundational understanding of AI concepts (both existing and emerging) and their practical application. Deployment Skills: Demonstrated experience with infrastructure-as-code. Cloud Proficiency: Demonstrated experience in cloud-native engineering, preferably with Azure. Cybersecurity : Awareness of cybersecurity and risk mitigation. Core Competencies: Collaborative, customer-centric approach, integrity, adaptability, decision making Prototyping Experience: Demonstrated experience in rapid prototyping, PoC development, or R&D roles. Innovation & Curiosity: Passion for innovation, curiosity, and the ability to work in ambiguous or exploratory situations. Communication: Ability to explain complex or technical concepts to non-technical people. Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in aligned technology areas, OR demonstrated experience in an aligned technology area. Security Requirements: Urban Utilities may need to perform a security clearance/SOCI requirements may apply, depending on the role and responsibilities. Desirable skills and experience IoT and OT: Experience in deployment an of Internet of Things sensors and infrastructure and Operational Technology. Agile & Design Thinking: Experience with Agile methodologies and/or Design Thinking is appreciated. Open-Source Contribution: Experience contributing to open-source projects is desirable. Participation in Makerspace or Tinkerspace communities. Start-up or Entrepreneurship : Experience with a start-up, side hustle or entrepreneurship program or community Performance of ‘on call’ duties are an inherent requirement of this role. This requires that the employee must be available to be on-call and to attend to work matters, both in person and remotely, outside of normal working hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, as reasonably required to fulfill the requirements of the position. The days, times, duration and frequency of on call arrangements may be subject to change, including at short notice, as required by Urban Utilities’ operational needs as applying from time to time. At all times whilst on-call, you must be fit for duty, contactable, and able to respond, including the ability to physically attend if required, to the operational needs of the business within a reasonable timeframe and in a safe manner.
