Let’s create a brighter future together, let’s make a difference Reporting to the Chapter Lead, Digital Engineering, the Senior Java Engineer will step into a pivotal role at the heart of our digital transformation journey across Australia and New Zealand. Inheriting our strategic technology roadmap, you’ll take ownership and lead the charge in modernising our general insurance platforms, bringing bold ideas to life and driving meaningful change. Working hand-in-hand within the CIO Team and cross-functional teams, you’ll champion innovation, shape technical direction, and influence a culture of engineering excellence. You will also be responsible for the following: Actively participating in the design and refactoring of legacy Java 8 components toward modern service architectures (e.g. Spring Boot microservices). Migrate GWT-based logic into more modern, maintainable structures (e.g. API-first/backend-for-frontend patterns). Identify and decouple monolithic dependencies across different area of business. Collaborate with architecture and DevOps teams to define scalable deployment strategies. Work on CI/CD pipelines using Bamboo and contribute toward transitioning to modern tooling. Implement engineering best practices, including testing, observability, and secure coding. Mentor other engineers and advocate for continuous improvement. Embed observability (logging, metrics, tracing) and resilience into new services. Drive clean coding standards, automated testing, and security best practices Important to your success - Unlock your potential In order to be successful, you will have the following: Multiple years of Java development experience, with at exposure to modernization/refactoring contexts. Deep understanding of legacy Java enterprise environments (WebSphere, GWT, JSP). Proven track record in modularizing and decoupling large codebases. Familiarity with CI/CD practices; prior experience with Bamboo or similar tools. Understanding of cloud architectures and containerization principles. Experience migrating from on-prem to cloud (AWS preferred). Experience in event-driven architectures (Kafka, SNS/SQS). Exposure to frontend modernization or API gateway integration. Familiarity with GWT/GXT is a bonus (for context in refactoring). Familiarity with domain-driven design, hexagonal architecture, or strangler patterns. Knowledge of container security, observability, and platform SRE practices. Belong.
