Outstanding senior leadership opportunity with a leading regulatory body Lead a skilled division across a diverse portfolio including Legal SES 2: $290,601 – $419,000 About the organisation The Essential Services Commission (commission) is an independent economic regulator that exists to promote the long-term interests of Victorian consumers with respect to the price, quality and reliability of essential services. Established in 2001 and led by four Commissioners and our Chief Executive Officer, the commission’s functions include setting prices, enforcing consumer protections, reporting on service standards and market performance across the electricity and gas, water, local government and transport sectors. The commission also administers and regulates the Victorian Energy Upgrades program. As the state’s economic regulator of essential services, its decisions impact the daily lives of every Victorian, influencing many aspects of life for households and businesses across the state. The role The Governance, Legal, Operations and Engagement (GLOE) division is the enabler of the commission’s regulatory functions, providing Commissioners and staff with the tools and support needed to achieve regulatory best practice and serve the long-term interests of Victorian consumers. Reporting to the CEO, the Executive Director, GLOE manages an extensive portfolio encompassing Legal, Governance and Secretariat, Strategic Communications, People and Culture, Information Technology and Finance and Business Services. Each area is led by a senior leader who is an expert in their field and oversees their respective team. The Executive Director is the single point of contact for the CEO and Commissioners across critical areas. The ideal candidate Extensive experience and a keen interest in government best practice within a highly regulated, complex environment is an ideal background for this exciting role. The role requires strong legal or equivalent expertise in a legislative environment, along with experience operating within a regulatory setting. You’ll work closely with our regulatory divisions, using your knowledge to support compliance and help shape outcomes that align with the commission’s broader objectives. You demonstrate a willingness to pitch in, the ability to take ownership of a diverse and demanding portfolio and an appetite to keep abreast of best practice and apply it to your extensive portfolio. You can see the big picture but equally you’re not afraid of the detail. You are skilled in motivating your direct reports and can communicate effectively and confidently with Commissioners, the CEO and staff at all levels. You don’t need to be an expert in every area of your portfolio, but you do need to be an accomplished leader who is quick on the uptake, a good listener, able to accept responsibility and to see how each part of the GLOE division fits together.
