Overview: Expression of Interest for Technical Officer/Animal Technician in the RAF (RMIT Animal Facility) of the STEM College. Seeking Casual Technical Officer – Animal Technician with commitment to animal welfare and experience in a multi-species facility Casual HEW 4 11.5% Superannuation Based onsite at the Bundoora campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University About the Role The dual role of a Technical Officer and Animal Technician will report to the Technical Coordinator and be responsible for providing technical support to users of laboratories and workspaces while also working as an animal technician in a multi-species facility. Under the guidance of the Technical Coordinator, the successful candidate will contribute to the housekeeping and maintenance of laboratories and workshops, supporting the adoption and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards and best practices. Key responsibilities include helping run and maintain wash-up area and as required, helping in conducting animal welfare checks on weekdays, weekends and public holidays, ensuring animals are healthy and reporting any anomalies, euthanasia, maintaining high hygiene standards throughout the facility, and accurate record-keeping. About You This casual role requires a motivated individual to help with wash area, manual labour and is committed to the welfare of all animals, ideally with experience in an animal facility. To be successful in this position, you’ll have: Qualification in animal studies or working towards a related qualification is highly desirable Demonstrated experience with a variety of small laboratory animal species such as mice and rats in a research environment or equivalent with experience in general and PC1/2 laboratory areas. Demonstrated understanding and ability to comply with current legislation, regulatory bodies, codes and standards relating to the ethical use and care of live animals for scientific research purposes. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining laboratory-based instruments/ equipment relevant to animal research. Proven track record of building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including understanding and embracing a client-focused framework. Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industry regulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.
