AEMO at the Heart of Energy AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector. About the role AEMO Operations division is at the forefront of managing the power system the energy transition. Your role will support two key priorities in AEMO’s Corporate Plan: operating today's systems and markets and navigating the energy future. You will play an important role in driving AEMO and industry modelling capability and the future global direction of Power System Modelling. The primary focus of this role is to lead the management and development of small signal analysis models, support RMS and EMTP wide area model development, AEMO’s data request function, and uplift of operations technology. This role also has a focus on maintaining Power System Modelling information as well as championing model integrity and contributing to the Power System Modelling capability within AEMO. What you will be doing Be responsible for centralisation and development of small signal stability models, using SSAT as well as Mudpack software tools, for stability assessment of the National Electricity Market (NEM) with large quantities of inverter-based generation and customer energy resources. Lead the validation and benchmarking of small signal models using software tools like PSSE, PSCAD, Mudpack and SSAT. Lead integration of new models into and update of existing models in NEM wide-area RMS and EMT base cases when required. Perform simulation on the updated base cases to ascertain the model quality. Support development and tuning of seasonal snapshots, RMS and EMT bases cases for the NEM with increased penetration of inverter-based generations. Prepare clear, concise, and high quality written and verbal communications including reports, stakeholder presentations, information packs, briefing papers; contribute to uplifting network modelling and data request management efficiency and quality. Coach or direct junior staff on network modelling and analysis functions to deliver high quality outcomes - including necessary peer review and technical support. Assess future requirements for power system modelling, including improving simulation speed, identifying model limitations, migration to new software versions and other essential power system modelling needs. Independently undertake simulation and analysis of the power system using specialised computer simulation tools and use these to identify and resolve network model quality issues. Proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop clear, audience-focused, and consistent messaging. What you will bring to the role Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a discipline relevant to power systems. Extensive knowledge of modern power system theory and key challenges, power system modelling, and power system analysis techniques. Extensive experience in using power systems simulation applications such as PSCAD and PSS/E for power system modelling and analysis purposes. Demonstrated experience in using Mudpack and SSAT as well as other analytical software such as MATLAB is highly desirable. Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, specifically relating to electricity transmission and generation. Solid understanding and knowledge of the physical operation of the electricity transmission systems, network constraints, and the overarching markets. Demonstrated experience in interpreting power system analysis performed by others. Proficiency in automation of processes and programs with an object-oriented programming language (Python, C++, Fortran etc.) is desirable. Demonstrated experience in leading work packages and leveraging junior staff to achieve timely delivery of specified outcomes. Very good communication skills, particularly the ability to negotiate with and make recommendations to internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to prepare high quality reports suitable for other technical experts, senior management, or external stakeholders. In return some of our benefits to you Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more. Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year. Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
