About this role: A Learning Support Teacher is specifically employed to work with students who need extra support or require an advanced program of education, in order to complete their learning successfully. A key aspect of working in special needs is identifying individual needs and being responsible for creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment. Job tasks and responsibilities: Assess the abilities and potential of students requiring a specific study program. Referrals-organise a Teacher Referral Form and Parent Consent Form prior to providing support sessions. Write cognitive assessment referrals. Complete the Parent Questionnaire for cognitive and language assessments. Provide specialist education advice to school principal and the teachers. Create/organise an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student by collaborating with teachers which outlines the goals that he will work toward and associated activities. Develop and adapt the curriculum to make it relevant for students with disabilities. Prepare Lessons and resources for the students with special needs and at risk. Teach academic subjects and practical self-help skills either individuals or small groups of students by using various methods within or outside the class. Work very closely with other professionals, including speech therapists and psychologists. Organise the Psychologist for the cognitive assessments in conjunction with the Speech Pathologist. Organise meetings with Psychologist and parents to discuss cognitive assessment results. Feedback from Psychologist to be given to the Speech Pathologist. Liaising with parents and teachers to provide feedback on students’ progress. Organising and attending Parent Support Group (PSG) meetings. Ensure a high standard of record keeping in relation to students with disabilities. Attend in services and meetings appropriate to the position and be knowledgeable about the range of students support and welfare services and agencies in the local and wider community. Knowledge Skills & Abilities: Tertiary degree in a teaching discipline Current VIT registration Ability to integrate IT into the curriculum and teaching practice. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students and colleagues Able to manage pastoral issues relative to staff, students and parents through effective dialogue and process. Well-developed report writing and oral communication skills.
