The key duties of the position include Employment Opportunity The Office of Constitutional Law (OCL) is seeking a motivated and high performing person to join the Constitutional Policy Section (CPS) as a Senior Legal Officer (EL1). OCL sits within the Public Law and Modern Slavery Division in the Integrity and International Group. The function of OCL and CPS is to provide advice and assistance on matters of constitutional law, policy and litigation. CPS also provides advice and assistance in relation to constitutional issues having general implications for Commonwealth and federal arrangements. This covers advice on questions of the Attorney-General's intervention in constitutional litigation, and the implications of such litigation for Commonwealth policy, as well as co-operative federal arrangements, such as those based on referrals of power by the States. CPS plays an important role as instructor in constitutional litigation, including High Court litigation which may have significant whole-of-government implications. CPS also has responsibility for the Parliamentary Privileges Act 1987. All officers in OCL also perform a range of other duties including reviewing Cabinet submissions, scrutinising draft legislation and providing comments on international instruments. OCL also provides advice and assistance to the Government in relation to possible amendments to the Constitution. How you can help us make a difference We are looking for someone with relevant training and experience who enjoys working in a fast-paced, challenging environment who can apply their knowledge and skills to complex legal policy issues with implications for the whole of the Commonwealth government as well as for federal-state relations. They will be able to find workable solutions to problems, seeking advice from their supervisor on the best course of action. Our ideal candidate will be someone with leadership skills who is able to work collaboratively and flexibly across the section and branch to achieve quality outcomes. The successful applicant will ideally have knowledge of and/or an interest in constitutional law. Other qualifications: Applicants must hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Secretary, is appropriate to the duties of the office, or admission in Australia as a legal practitioner.
