Legal Counsel - Construction — Mascot, Rockdale Area

Job Description About the team and the role We are seeking a Legal Counsel to provide commercially focused legal services, specialising in construction law, to Sydney Airport (SYD). There will also be the opportunity to work on technology, services, energy and utilities matters. These services will be delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner either by directly providing the relevant advice and assistance, or by managing external legal resources to ensure that SYD is appropriately advised to ensure the most beneficial outcome for SYD is achieved. The Government Relations, Sustainability and Legal business unit (GSL) supports all of SYD’s business units in numerous ways and our responsibilities cover a diverse range of SYD’s corporate functions. The Legal Team, which sits within GSL, covers all legal matters including contracting, dispute resolution and compliance advice. Please note that this will be a 24-month fixed term contract. In this role, you will have the opportunity to Provide legal services in a timely, proactive, and efficient manner to all levels of the business, including providing written and oral advice, drafting agreements and correspondence, managing/ coordinating litigation and other dispute resolution processes, attending internal and external meetings and negotiating with third parties and their lawyers. Anticipate legal exposures in relation to SYD’s various activities and brief the Senior Legal Counsel and senior management on significant matters as necessary. Maintain awareness of the legislative and regulatory environment relating to key aspects of SYD’s operations, including monitoring changes to applicable legislation and forming strategies, procedures, and policies in response to legislative changes for implementation by the business. Contribute to the development of corporate policies, initiatives, and objectives as they relate to the legal services provided. Revise precedent agreements to ensure they are kept current and are in plain English. Ensure adherence to the approved delegation of corporate authority in the execution of legal documentation. Review and sign-off on legal cost estimates. Review external advice/agreements and provide feedback as appropriate. Maintain a watching brief over certain external legal services as allocated. About you Minimum 5 years’ post-admission legal experience, focused on construction law. Law degree and current practicing certificate. Experience and knowledge of evaluating and reviewing external advice and advising on key legal issues. Infrastructure experience is highly desired. Ability to manage a large number of internal client matters to ensure prompt advice is provided. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing business needs and demands. Ability to work as part of a small legal team in a cohesive manner and to bring initiative, energy and enthusiasm to the role.
