Representing more than 20,200 members the LIV's purpose is to foster the rule of law and to promote improvements and developments in the law as it affects the public of Victoria. Position Overview: The Principal Legal Policy Officer reports to the Head of Legal Policy and is part of a dynamic team of 18 legal professionals at the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV). The Legal Policy Team is made up of several Lawyers and paralegals who have the day to day management of the LIV’s Practice Sections, which are: Administrative Law and Human Rights (ALHR); Agency Prosecutions; Commercial, Costs, and Litigation Lawyers; Disability and Elder Health Law (DEHL); Family Law; Criminal Law; Property and Environmental Law (PELS); and Technology and Innovation (TIS). As the Principal Legal Policy Officer, you will be a leader in the Legal Policy team and will play a role in shaping the legal landscape in Victoria and nationally by assisting in the development of, and furthering, the LIV’s policy positions. In this capacity, you will be responsible for identifying emerging legal issues, assisting in the development of nuanced, carefully considered policy positions, and executing impactful advocacy strategies and campaigns to influence policy and law reform on behalf of the legal profession and the broader community. On a day-to-day basis, this involves drafting, reviewing and approving written submissions, managing Legal Policy projects, helping to develop team members with their submission – writing skills as well as providing guidance and leadership to team members. Key Responsibilities Include: Reviewing and approving legal policy and law reform written deliverables, including responsive submissions and proactive advocacy Providing guidance, support, training and leadership to the Legal Policy team on advocacy and submission drafting skills Researching and analysing legal issues, interpreting legislation and guiding the team to deliver accurate and timely submissions; and Attending meetings with stakeholders to advocate LIV policy positions To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: Preferred Australian Lawyer with eligibility to hold a Victorian Practising Certificate; and either At least 3-years post-admission experience; or At least 3-years prior experience in legal policy, ideally with project management experience Experience delivering training and mentoring Essential Excellent legal research, analysis, drafting, and editing skills Experience in policy development and advocacy Capacity to engage with and understand various areas of law and a keen interest in pertinent issues within the legal sector Excellent project management skills The LIV encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin, LGBTIQ communities and from diverse cultures, language groups, and people with disabilities.
