The purpose of Risk & Legal is to provide expert legal and risk advice that enables good decision making and safeguards outcomes for UniSuper’s members. The Legal team comprises three teams: Legal Advisory, Legal Negotiations, and Investments Legal. This role is accountable for the provision of legal advice to the business in relation to complaints, disputes, litigation and insured benefits, with a focus on insurance and claims law, external dispute resolution (courts and tribunals), and AFCA complaint handling. Key Responsibilities Provide high-quality advice which enables achieving the Fund’s strategic goals while managing legal risk Manage the day-to-day conduct of allocated disputes including preparing and executing dispute resolution strategies, drafting legal submissions, and liaising with external dispute resolution bodies Appear as legal counsel for UniSuper at conciliation conferences and mediations Provide balanced, independent, and commercial advice in an accessible and engaging way in relation to a wide range of insurance and claims related issues, assessments, and decisions Contribute to the development of processes, systems, precedents, and templates concerning the Insurance & Claims team and the resolution of complaints generally Draft and review recommendation, committee and Board papers, legal submissions, settlement agreements, and other documents as needed Make commercial decisions on legal issues and make informed contributions to commercial discussions Conduct training on legal issues or provide input to training developed by others (where applicable) Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with key stakeholders About You In this exciting new role, you will be an integral part of the transformative journey that shapes how we deliver exceptional customer experiences and where our customers need us most. For this reason, we are looking for someone who has experience working in a fast-moving environment and is comfortable working with a degree of ambiguity. You can exercise independent judgment on legal matters to protect the fund’s legal position while maintaining a commercial, pragmatic, and collaborative approach is critical. You will also bring: Knowledge of the law in relation to a wide range of insurance and claims related queries, assessments, and decisions, external dispute resolution frameworks and strategies Strong written and verbal advocacy skills to persuade and influence others, and to present a compelling legal argument Strong problem-solving skills and high attention to detail, plus an ability to develop innovative legal solutions to solve legal and commercial issues Proven ability to exercise independent judgment on legal matters to protect the fund’s legal position Pragmatic and logical in approach and decision making; Results-focused and outcome-driven Legal qualifications and a current practising certificate At least five years’ PQE in a law firm environment or in-house legal function Why Join Us UniSuper’s high-performance culture is supported by a range of benefits that demonstrate our commitment to ensuring our employees achieve their full potential, thrive, and grow their career with us.
