Senior Gateway / Network Security Engineer — Canberra Region, Australian Capital Territory

DEWR provides a Secure Internet Gateway service to the department and several Federal government agencies. We are seeking an experienced Senior Gateway or Network Security engineer to contribute to the operations and management of the environment. The Secure Gateway Services section sits within the Security Operations Branch. The branch plays a critical role in the provision and operations of the department's cyber security infrastructure and incident response capability. Our mission is to provide the services that enable the Department to deliver its business outcomes securely in an appropriately risk managed environment. Reporting to the Director of Secure Gateway Services, the Senior Gateway / Network Security Engineer is responsible for ensuring the departments Internet Gateway environment is secure, reliable, and maintained in accordance with relevant government regulations and industry practices. While the Senior Gateway Engineer is a highly technical position, it will require regular engagement with senior management to explain complex technical issues, in addition to the mentoring of junior staff. The roles may require on-call on a rotating roster, and occasional after-hours overtime work may be required with overtime provisions available. Please note that position is available at both the Executive Level 1 and Executive Level 1 IT Specialist Designations, depending on the individual skills and experience of successful candidates. Specialist positions are subject to eligibility requirements outlined in the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations Enterprise Agreement 2024-27, and at are only offered at the discretion of the delegate. The key duties of the position include Responsibilities of the Executive Level 1 Senior Gateway / Network Security Engineer include: Designing, managing and maintaining the department's Internet Gateway Environment in a secure and reliable manner in accordance with relevant government regulations and industry practices Configuring, managing and hardening the Internet Gateway Environment, including devices such as web proxies, email appliances, Sandboxes, DNS, load balancing/WAF, IPS/IDS, firewalls, routers, switches, VPN, SFTP and other infrastructure related to the management and monitoring of the environment. Leading complex gateway projects, troubleshooting and resolution for major technical incidents and changes, briefing management on major technical faults and changes relating to systems and mentoring junior staff. Developing system documentation and processing technical service requests in accordance with team processes and the Information Security Manual (ISM). Managing Gateway Asset Life Cycle including conducting procurement, decommission and disposal activities for asset replacements or other equipment as required Keeping current with ACSC programs and initiatives and mentoring junior staff members. Occasional after-hours maintenance work as required, with overtime provisions as stipulated in the Enterprise Agreement. On-call on a rotating roster will be required once the candidate is familiar with the environment and capable of fielding troubleshooting calls.
