Principal Mining Engineer — Ardrossan, Yorke Peninsula

Job Title: Principal Mining Engineer Location: Hillside (Site-based, with relocation provided – Must reside within 35km of Hillside) About the Opportunity REX Minerals is seeking an experienced Principal Mining Engineer to lead the strategic mine planning, development, and operational execution of the Hillside Project. This role is instrumental in transitioning the project from exploration to development and into full-scale mining operations, ensuring that the mine is optimised for productivity, safety, and long-term sustainability. As a senior technical leader, you will oversee mine design, production planning, resource allocation, contractor management, and compliance, working closely with geologists, engineers, contractors, and regulatory bodies to deliver an efficient, cost-effective, and compliant operation. Key Responsibilities • Actively apply and promote MACH Metals policies and ensure that workers observe these principles within the workplace. • Actively participate in the design, implementation and maintenance of the Integrated Management System. • Develop and implement the strategic mine plan, ensuring alignment with production targets, cost expectations, and safety objectives. • Oversee all mine planning activities, ensuring compliance with safety, budget, and project timelines. • Work closely with geologists and engineers to interpret resource data and optimise mine design for productivity, safety, and cost efficiency. • Develop a realistic timeline and budget for mine development and operational readiness. • Ensure mining operations comply with all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as environmental and safety standards. • Foster a strong safety culture by conducting regular safety audits, risk assessments, and implementing hazard management strategies. • Ensure compliance with legislative and site safety policies, procedures and statutory requirements. • Oversee the daily performance and contractual obligations of mining contractors, ensuring adherence to operational and safety requirements. • Monitor budgets, cost forecasts, and capital expenditure to ensure the project remains financially viable. • Develop and execute cost-saving initiatives to optimise operations without compromising safety or quality. • Coordinate with operational teams to oversee personnel deployment, equipment utilisation, and resource allocation. • Develop an effective and productive working relationship with the contract miner to ensure strong performance and successful project delivery. • Drive efficiency improvements and implement innovative technology solutions to enhance mine productivity and sustainability. • Support and guide junior engineers, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and professional development. • Maintain accurate mine planning documentation and reports, ensuring regulatory and corporate compliance. • Lead investigations into operational issues and implement corrective actions to continuously improve site performance. • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including government bodies, local communities, and senior leadership, to ensure smooth project execution. About You You are a highly experienced mining engineer with extensive knowledge in mine design, strategic planning, and operational leadership. You thrive in complex, dynamic mining environments and have a strong track record of leading early-stage mining projects from development through to full-scale operations. Key Skills and Experience • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field. • Australian Driver’s Licence. • Master’s degree is desirable. • 10 years of experience in mining engineering environments, with experience in a leadership or strategic role, preferably in open-pit mining. • Proven experience in mine design, feasibility studies, project management, and regulatory compliance. • Strong knowledge of mine planning and design software. • Expertise in mine design, permitting processes, safety regulations, environmental compliance, and operational management. • Proven leadership skills, with experience managing multidisciplinary teams and mentoring engineers. • Excellent project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. • Strong business acumen, with the ability to transition mining projects from development to full-scale operations. • Advanced problem-solving and decision-making abilities. • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage with senior management, regulatory bodies, and external partners. • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritise tasks and make independent decisions in a fast-paced environment.
