Representing more than 20,200 members the LIV's purpose is to foster the rule of law and to promote improvements and developments in the law as it affects the public of Victoria. The LIV is a non-profit organisation dedicated to its members and the development, maintenance and the sustenance of the law for the benefit of the community. Position Overview: The Legal Policy Officer works together with the Legal Policy Manager, reports to the Head of Legal Policy, and is part of a dynamic team of 17 legal professionals within the Legal Policy Team at the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV). The Legal Policy Team is made up of, in addition to the Head of Legal Policy and the Policy Manager, several Lawyers and Policy Officers and Paralegals who manage the LIV’s Practice Sections, which are: Administrative Law and Human Rights (ALHR); Agency Prosecutions; Commercial, Costs, and Litigation Lawyers; Disability and Elder Health Law (DEHL); Family Law; Criminal Law; Property and Environmental Law (PELS); and Technology and Innovation (TIS). As the Legal Policy Officer, you will play a role in shaping the legal landscape in Victoria and nationally by assisting in the development of, and furthering, the LIV’s policy positions. In this capacity, you will be responsible for identifying emerging legal issues, assisting in the development of nuanced, carefully considered policy positions, and executing impactful advocacy strategies and campaigns to influence policy and law reform on behalf of the legal profession and the broader community. Key Responsibilities Include: Delivering legal policy and law reform written deliverables that are complex, and/or of strategic significance to the LIV, and/or which span Legal Policy Practice Sections; Managing the delivery of Legal Policy projects as required; Providing guidance and support to the Legal Policy Lawyers and Policy Officers and Paralegals as required; and Supporting the Legal Policy Manager with delivering training to Legal Policy Lawyers and Policy Officers and Paralegals. Draft and review legal policy submissions and other key correspondence, including proactive advocacy, briefing notes for meetings, and Law Institute Journal articles Initiate and lead Legal Policy projects Provide guidance and leadership to Legal Policy Lawyers and Policy Officers and Paralegals, including regarding general Practice Section Committee management To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: Australian Lawyer with eligibility to hold a Victorian Practising Certificate is preferred. 2-years’ plus post-admission experience is desirable. Prior experience in policy, ideally with project management experience is preferred.
