The key duties of the position include The Role As the successful candidate, you will work in a team of engineers and technical officers to provide a broad variety of Defence stakeholders (including capability acquisition) and space community with expert spectrum engineering advice and work to shape the policies, & procedures of spectrum management as a growing capability within Defence. The successful candidate will be required to perform technical analyses and to be able to negotiate with the satellite operators of other countries to ensure that current Defence satellites are able to operate without interference, and that sufficient satellite spectrum is secured to strategically meet future Defence requirements. You will identify the need for engagement for domestic and international spectrum matters of strategic interest to Defence and assist in the direction of that work. You will be providing a high level of customer service for a variety of Defence and external clients including other government agencies. You will regularly attend international forums, spectrum working groups (ITU-R and APT) and satellite coordination meetings representing Defence. This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team The successful applicant will work in a team of fellow spectrum engineers and specialists that holistically manage the use of the radiofrequency spectrum by Defence at a regulatory and strategic level and providing the necessary support for operational and tactical users. Team consists of experienced Technical Officers and Engineers that over the years have gained experience in managing spectrum for Defence systems. The specialist spectrum engineers provide advice to Defence groups and services on accessing spectrum for space, terrestrial and electronic warfare systems and acts as a centre of excellence for the Defence community. Our Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will have: Skills to perform critical and complex engineering activities including modelling and simulation, provide advice in the field of communication engineering under broad direction, effective problem solving, and develop plans and processes to enhance the achievement of business outcomes. Experience in application of communications engineering knowledge and experience to identify risks and uncertainties and take these into account in planning, decision making and priority setting. Skills to build and sustain positive relationships with team members, actively participate in team work and motivate and mentor developing engineers. Skills to assess technical and design packages including scoping, planning, reviewing, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions. Excellent communication and customer engagement skills. High-level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve tasks and business objectives. Skills to manage workflows, resources, of a small team including detailing measurable milestones and expected outcomes.
