Our team The Community Safety Branch in the Place and Communities Division develops information on natural hazard risk that is used to inform government, the private sector and public. This information is developed through research within the agency, through external collaborations and through the application of the outcomes of other external research. This work requires an understanding of the vulnerabilities of the built environment and the opportunities to mitigate these. This role sits within the Vulnerability, Resilience and Mitigation Section (VRMS) of the Community Safety Branch. VRMS develops vulnerability information and maintains and operates a modelling capability for the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) to estimate insured losses due to terrorist incidents The key duties of the position include The role will suit someone with a sound understanding of the nature of the built environment, experience in natural hazard risk assessment. In this role you will: develop vulnerability functions for various building and critical infrastructure types and uses that are applicable to a range of natural hazards. Vulnerability relationships may be developed analytically, empirically or heuristically. This includes the utilisation of loss data derived from post-disaster surveys and the insurance industry. undertake flood and earthquake impact and risk assessments at a range of geographical scales using open-source software tools. Participate in short post-disaster survey activities within Australia and the region to collect data for the development and validation of vulnerability models. simulate the impacts of improvised explosive devices in Australian business precincts using in-house blast and loss modelling software. Be trained and rostered to provide business day support to a loss modelling capability in a secure environment. Industry experience in structural design and construction or experience in vulnerability model development, or other relevant research experience is highly desirable. The ability to travel within Australia and to regional countries for short term survey activity as part of the agency's support of Australian Government initiatives in disaster risk reduction is highly desirable. Experience with computational fluid dynamics modelling is highly desirable. Experience with GIS software and applications would be an advantage. Are you unsure about applying?
