AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO’s end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market. About the role With more than 160 GW of new generation to connect in the next 30 years, you will be instrumental in connecting a range of technologies, including onshore wind, offshore wind, hydro and solar generation; battery and storage systems, and hydrogen plants. On a day-to-day basis, your stakeholders will span across network service providers, generation developers and investors, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, consultants, Governments, regulators and policy makers. In this role, you will be able to visit the projects you have helped create and develop long-term relationships with key energy industry players. Whilst providing training and mentoring to junior team member, you will be given the opportunity to build your reputation through industry forums and working groups, conferences, and memberships. Reporting to the Team Lead Onboarding and Connections, this role can be based across all states. What you will be doing Work collaboratively with network service providers, connection applicants and/or original equipment manufacturers to assess and negotiate performance standards, as well as progress commissioning activities. Undertake simulation and analysis of the power system to assess grid connection requirements for new large-scale generators. Assess new generator connection models, reactive power plants and control systems. Develop, maintain, and improve AEMO’s analysis/reporting methods and tools to meet business requirements and increase the efficiency of team operations. Manage your priorities effectively to deliver multiple concurrent projects and packages of work to the required timeframes. Proactively build AEMO’s reputation as a trusted partner to generation developers, original equipment manufacturers, Government, Network Service Providers, Market Participants, Customers, and other stakeholders. What you will bring to the role Education / Certificates Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis. Experience and Knowledge Demonstrated technical experience in leading/contributing to technical project teams. Well-developed experience in managing generator connection processes, with experience in assessing and resolving generator and power system performance issues. Understanding of negotiation requirements of technical issues with commercial and reputational drivers. Understanding of the key technical issues impacting large scale infrastructure projects, and the commercial drivers of generation developers. Ability to communicate technical/engineering concepts to a non-technical audience in a clear and easy to understand language. Knowledge of the electricity industry, NEM dispatch process, generator behaviour and network constraints. Transparent in decision making and comfortable with working in an exposed environment.
