Design Engineer. Our western Sydney based client has recognised the need to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Mechanical / Automotive / Mechatronics Design engineer. Initially a fixed term, 6-month salaried role. Role Purpose Managing engineering projects, a pivotal role in designing, developing, and integrating advanced equipment tailored to the operational needs of emergency equipment. The Design Engineer will oversee the end-to-end engineering process, from initial scoping and discovery to prototype testing and final operational deployment. This position supports several agencies, Fire, Ambulance, emergency services. The mission is to deliver innovative, high-performance equipment solutions that enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency for all. Key Performance Measures Collaborate on technical specifications and system integration for components, including chassis, crew protection systems, water delivery systems, and communications systems. Prepare and maintain detailed project plans, timelines and budgets for appliance development and testing phases. Coordinate prototype builds, oversee testing protocols and evaluate performance against key performance indicators (KPIs). Analyse test results and provide recommendations for design improvements and optimisations. Develop and review engineering documentation, including design plans, testing protocols, and procurement specifications. Ensure all documentation is accurate, thorough, and aligned with statutory and legislative requirements. Identify and mitigate risks and implements quality assurance associated with the design and testing of appliances to guarantee compliance with operational and safety standards. Essential Requirements A bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably Mechanical). 2-5 years of experience in a mechanical engineering role. Highly capable in both 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor) and familiarity with design documentation and BOM preparation. Expert level in MS Excel Sound understanding of mechanical design principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes. Exposure to QA practices, including inspection and compliance verification. Strong technical writing skills for preparing reports, datasheets, and project documentation. Positive attitude and drive for continuous improvement and development. Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with high attention to detail. Australian work rights Key Knowledge and Experience Advanced knowledge in technical management, research and problem solving with the ability to develop and implement complex research and development projects. Experience in engineering design principles which includes the interpretation of drawings, models, specifications, and standards. An understanding of design best practice principles as aligned to Australian Design Rules. Genuine appreciation and understanding of a volunteer-based community service. This is initially a six month Salaried, contract position.
