Legal Services This is a full-time continuing position at HEW 8 . Transition in-house and work on a wide range of front end and back end employment related matters in the tertiary sector. Based at our St Lucia campus About This Opportunity As a Legal Counsel (Workplace Relations), you will be responsible for providing legal and strategic advice on a broad range of disputes and contentious matters, including general employment issues, student and staff grievances, and assisting with managing the conduct of litigation on behalf of UQ. The position also provides legal advice on a wide range of other legal issues affecting UQ. Key responsibilities will include: Legal Advice Provide legal advice on a wide range of employment-related legal issues, including sexual misconduct, bullying or harassment, workplace investigations, workplace health and safety, employee mobility, employer obligations and employee entitlements as well as on student and staff grievance and misconduct processes. developing strategies to proactively diffuse or seek early resolution of disputes. Litigation Assist with the conduct of sensitive litigation in relation to employment law matters. Draft correspondence and negotiate on behalf of UQ and liaise with UQ's insurance in relation to disputes Policy Development Advise on new legislative programs and help develop policy frameworks to support UQ’s operations and strategic objectives. Business Strategy and Collaboration Foster strong stakeholder relationships while driving innovation, improving efficiencies, managing risks, and enhancing legal resources for UQ. About You Essential The successful applicant must be admitted as a Solicitor or Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland, with demonstrated relevant expertise and experience (a minimum of 4 years post admission experience is preferred). Significant experience in a number of these areas: both contentious and advisory aspects of employment law including unfair dismissal, employment contracts and termination of employment; advising on claims involving allegations of discrimination, bullying and sexual misconduct including relevant court and tribunal processes & dispute resolution strategies; a sound working knowledge of court processes in the Federal and Queensland courts; Administrative law and decision making (with experience acting for a statutory body or government entity preferred); and advising on strategy to resolve commercial and other disputes, including through the use of alternative dispute resolution methods as well as litigation. Demonstrated ability to draft legal documents and deliver high quality, timely legal advice on a wide range of legal issues. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with strong negotiation and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritise work, and meet deadlines. Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality legal advice. Desirable Understanding of the legislative framework that applies to UQ or experience in acting for a statutory body or government entity. You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment and may be required to complete background checks including, criminal history and education checks.
