I am currently partnering with one of Queensland’s leading State Government Departments to recruit an experienced Data Engineer with extensive knowledge of Microsoft Purview. This is an initial 12-month day rate contract likely extension based in Brisbane’s CBD. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in Microsoft Purview Data Governance implementation and a deep understanding of data governance practices in a government setting. Proficiency in designing and implementing data cataloguing, data classification and quality metrics across a Microsoft Cloud and on-premises environment is essential. This role will lead the design, configuration and rollout of the Data Governance module of Microsoft Purview. The Senior Data Engineer will collaborate with solution and data architects, as well as teams in infrastructure, networking, identity and change management, to ensure Purview’s data governance capabilities are implemented in alignment with departmental requirements. This position will be pivotal in establishing metadata management, data cataloguing, classification and quality metrics to support the department’s growing data landscape. In this role you will have the following key responsibilities: Design and configure the Data Governance module in Microsoft Purview to enable data cataloguing, classification and quality metrics across the department’s Microsoft Cloud and on-premises data estate. Work closely with team members, solution architects and vendors to understand requirements; Collaborate with solution architects, data architects and data governance teams to ensure alignment with department policies and data governance best practices; Partner with IT Branch teams to ensure the solution meets functional and non-functional requirements; Develop guidelines for data classification and quality management within Purview, ensuring compliance with departmental data governance standards; Coordinate activities across IT teams, change managers and vendors to implement the Data Governance module of Microsoft Purview across the Microsoft Cloud estate and on-premises data sources; Provide technical leadership and guidance to business teams, team members and stakeholders on the Data Governance module of Purview and best practices; Stay up to date with the latest developments in Microsoft Purview’s data catalog and data governance features; and Actively participate in project planning sessions and proactively provide updates and communicate risks or barriers to progress. To be successful you will have the following key skills and experience: Extensive experience in designing and delivering data governance and data catalogue solutions using the Data Governance module of Microsoft Purview and Azure Purview; Experience with the Risk and Compliance and Data Security modules of Microsoft Purview would be an advantage; Strong track record in implementing best practices for data access, data curation, data discovery, data health and data understanding within Microsoft Purview; Demonstrated knowledge of Azure, SharePoint, Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 architecture and services; Proficiency with data and analytics solutions in Microsoft Fabric and MS Azure resources (e.g., Data Lake, Synapse), Databricks and Power BI, with an understanding of their individual and combined architectures; Experience connecting on-premises systems to Microsoft Purview; In-depth understanding of data governance principles and practices; Knowledgeable in Microsoft administration and security configurations; Strong understanding of data governance roles and role configuration within Purview, using RBAC to define responsibilities for data curation and metadata management; Proactive engagement with business and technical stakeholders and team members; Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills; Proficient in oral and written communication, including implementation documentation; Active contributor in prioritisation discussions with team members and other stakeholders; and Ability to work independently and self-manage.
