An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Software Engineer (RSE) to join the Snow Centre for Immune Health at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. About the position The Snow Centre for Immune Health has a global mission to improve the lives of people with immune diseases, using a new approach to immune health. The centre, co-led by WEHI and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, will bring together leading Australian and international researchers with a shared mission to transform how we research and treat the immune system. Our goal is to accelerate discoveries into the underlying features and markers of immune health, to identify disease causes early and target appropriate treatment. The Centre has been established in partnership with the Snow Medical Research Foundation. WEHI is seeking an experienced RSE to build user friendly interfaces such as web applications or desktop GUIs and to develop and maintain analysis pipelines to run. The appointee will develop productive relationships with mathematical biologists, wet lab scientists, clinician scientists, other members of the research computing platform and Research Systems teams in ITS to create sophisticated analysis tools from proof-of-concept software. Selection Criteria Personal qualities Ability to learn complex concepts across multiple domains and demonstrate that to a domain-specific audience. Outstanding problem-solving skills. Comfortable with a continuous-improvement culture, including being open, honest, and identifying mistakes so that they can be corrected as soon as possible. Excellent communication and stakeholder skills, including the ability to communicate across academic disciplines. Highly collaborative by default with an ability to leverage skills and knowledge outside an organisation and translate those skills into benefiting the organisation. Curious, opportunistic and intellectually acquisitive. Knowledge and skills Work with mathematical biologists and users to convert proof of concept analysis and simulation software in tools that can be used by non-specialists. Significant contribution to open-source projects. A postgraduate degree in a computationally intense discipline or equivalent experience. Excellent software engineering skills. Experience in a research environment. Technical Proficiency: Experience with at least some of the following. Programming languages such as Python, R, Julia, C++, Java, etc. Understanding of biological systems, preferably the adaptive immune system. Web technologies such as REST, HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Cloud technologies and containers. High-Performance Computing, batch systems, such as Slurm or PBS. Workflow systems such as Janis, Nextflow, CWL, etc. Experience in numerical methods (desirable). Research experience in data-intensive or computationally intensive life science areas (desirable). Experience in commercial and/or clinical software development (desirable) Terms of appointment This position is available for 2 years in a full time capacity. Salary is Research Support Employee Level 7 - 8 ($101,911 - $124,104). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
