System Design and Transformation’s purpose is to identify, plan and manage emerging WA energy system challenges and opportunities, to ensure the energy system remains secure, reliable and affordable. About the role Focused on the future of Western Australia’s main electricity system – the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) – and gas sector, this role is responsible for long-term engineering strategy for reliability and security of the SWIS. This position is responsible for delivering uplift to AEMO’s engineering strategy, delivering to the broad scope set out in AEMOs SWIS Engineering Roadmap. This role will directly support AEMO’s ability to maintain SWIS security and reliability, whilst supporting industry in the transition to a reliable, secure, affordable, and sustainable energy future. What you will be doing The role will include: Support and lead delivery of system design and transformation major initiatives under the SWIS Engineering Roadmap. Work collaboratively with the team and program management to coordinate and optimise delivery with other related initiatives including AEMO’s SWIS Engineering Roadmap. Engineering expertise and input – provide engineering expertise and advisory services to support reform development and implementation, by ensuring that new policy, regulatory and market mechanisms take appropriate account of technical and power system engineering requirements. This includes the delivery of: o Projects that help proponents value the service contributions from their assets, and o Early works for transition points, ready for handover to AEMO Operations Technical communication and outreach – responsibility for helping translate AEMO’s latest technical understanding from the Engineering Roadmap into a form that can be easily digested by participants, market bodies, governments, and a wider non-technical audience. Through this role, maximise the impact of Engineering Roadmap implementation efforts, helping communicate the value of AEMO’s work, and strengthening AEMO’s position as a trusted thought leader for the energy transition. What you will bring to the role Education/ Certificates • Appropriate tertiary and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (for example engineering). Experience and Knowledge Deep expertise in the operation and planning of large power systems, and the engineering challenges that need to be addressed as the SWIS transitions. Demonstrated experience making innovation and change happen, thinking strategically about the requirements of the future, being comfortable with ambiguity, and driving outcomes in the face of resistance. Well-developed and demonstrated analytical skills sufficient to review, critique and approve the modelled outcomes that underpin key messages to stakeholders. Demonstrated experience in managing strategic reforms that require extensive stakeholder engagement and negotiation, as well as WEM Rules change management and implementation. Demonstrated experience in managing a variety of stakeholders with conflicting interests, negotiating agreed outcomes, and delivering these on time and to budget. Experience in facilitating industry working groups and negotiating the resolution of complex issues across stakeholders with competing objectives and a variety of commercial and reputational drivers. Experience in managing a diverse set of matrixed resources with differing skill sets and objectives to achieve time and budget requirements.
