Worawa Aboriginal College are seeking a part time Performing Arts Teacher (0.6 FTE) to commence Term 1, 2025. About the College Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is an Aboriginal community initiative as Victoria’s only registered Independent Aboriginal School. A full boarding school, Worawa caters for Aboriginal girls in the secondary years of schooling, Years 7-12. Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. Students come from Aboriginal communities across the country. The College’s unique Gananggurr pedagogy model is based on the Aboriginal values of Relationship, Responsibility, Respect, and Rigour, which inform all aspects of College operations. Along with the core academic program, the College places great emphasis on nurturing and celebrating Aboriginal culture, fostering students' self-esteem and wellbeing. About the Role Reporting to the Head of Teaching and Learning, Worawa is seeking a part time (0.6 FTE) Performing Arts Teacher to provide a comprehensive and engaging music, dance, and drama program for young Aboriginal women (Years 7-12). The ideal candidate will foster students' creativity, performance skills, and cultural pride through an inclusive and culturally sensitive performing arts curriculum. This position offers an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team and support the academic and cultural growth of Aboriginal students. Some of the duties of this role may include (but are not limited to); Provide high-quality instruction across multiple performing arts disciplines (music, dance, drama), tailored to secondary school students. Develop and implement a performing arts curriculum. Organise and lead productions, performances, and showcases, including the school musical theatre production. Teach and manage technical aspects of performances, including stage lighting, sound design, and set design. Infuse Indigenous cultural elements into the performing arts program, fostering cultural identity and pride. Assess student performances through consistent formative and summative evaluations. Collaborate with local Indigenous communities to incorporate traditional music, dance, and storytelling into the curriculum. This position requires the incumbent to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination. The successful candidate must have: A relevant qualification (such as a Bachelor’s degree in Education/Performing Arts or equivalent). Registration as a Teacher in Victoria (or be eligible for registration) Strong and versatile teaching skills and be able to adapt the teaching program to suit the needs of each student including EAL/D Proven experience in teaching performing arts, including music, dance, and drama, to secondary school students. Experience organising and directing school productions, concerts, plays, and performances. Knowledge and experience of child safety standards and mandatory reporting requirements (or willingness to gain these qualifications within six months). First Aid and Anaphylaxis Awareness training. Desirable: Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Experience working with Aboriginal students and communities, with a demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal cultures. Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Experience with Kodaly pedagogy.
