The key duties of the position include The Role As the EL 1 Project Engineer for the Strategic Shipbuilding Directorate within the Henderson Consolidation Project, you will report to the Director Strategic Shipbuilding and collaborate closely with other directorates, Branch & Division Heads, Defence industry participants and other external stakeholders. You will be supported by a small team comprised of ADF, APS and contractors. You will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a subject matter expert role, playing your part to implement key recommendations from the Defence Strategic Review and advance Continuous Naval shipbuilding in Western Australia. As an EL 1 Project Engineer, you will be accountable, under broad direction, to apply your in-depth knowledge and skills in project management, marine and mechanical engineering, to achieve results within a complex integrated program environment. You will make sound decisions and provide expert advice across a wide spectrum of input, from policy shaping and implementation, to strategic thinking, project engineering, planning and implementation. You will engage in complex problem solving and issues management, and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that can significantly impact strategic, political, or operational outcomes for Defence. You will be responsible for developing a sustainable high performing project engineering function, with a focus on achieving outcomes through innovation, continuous improvement, open communication, knowledge sharing and retention. You will develop, implement and maintain the policies and procedures relevant to your work within that function. This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team The Henderson Consolidation Taskforce, established in July 2024, is seeking an EL 1 Project Engineer to join its dynamic team. Our Ideal Candidate To succeed in this role, you will have to: Lead, plan and deliver project-engineering activities applying project management methodologies and engineering knowledge. Previous experience in a similar role, preferably within the defence or related industries. Having an understanding and appreciation of Defence integrated workplaces, with APS, ADF and contractors working together will also be highly regarded. The role may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), working at elevated heights, and in confined spaces, as well as occasional travel and work at alternative locations for short durations.
