Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Product Design Engineer to join our team, with strong metallurgical skills and experience. The key responsibility of the role is the introduction of new products from initial customer contact and collaboration, through to customer approval and production handover. It will also involve investigating and actioning of improvements to products and processes, by liaising with members from production and quality departments. The application requires a working knowledge of metallurgy, given the manufacturing nature of the company and the challenges with recycled raw material inputs. Key Areas of Responsibility: Involved in the introduction of new products, from initial customer contact and collaboration, through to customer approval and production handover, using project management skills/tools. Collaborate with customers to understand their product requirements and provide technical expertise throughout the design, material suitability and development process. Work alongside metallurgists and production engineers to select/improve the most appropriate material for specific applications. Interpreting customer drawings and information to various acceptance criteria, tolerances and standards detailed within the technical specifications. Utilise CAD drafting/modelling software for new products, processes, equipment, structures, modifications, illustrative diagrams, and plant layouts. Liaise with Production and Quality departments, providing technical product support when required. Observe, and interpret production data and trends to identify opportunities for improvement. Conduct trials for approval of designs and evaluation of product performance. This may include carrying out inspections, coordinating different tests on the material, preparing reports and supporting evidentiary documentation, and summary reports for internal and external customers. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success, including external stakeholders. Apply learning and understanding of the manufacturing processes to a high level. Have a hands-on attitude and experience in continuous improvement methodology in accordance with PDCA principles. Drive innovation across all areas of production by researching new techniques, methods, materials and processes that improve product performance and reduce costs. Qualifications/Skills: Bachelor’s degree in engineering Minimum of 2 – 3 years of relevant work experience in product design and development, project management and metallurgy Proficiency in CAD software, including casting simulation software. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Good attention to detail Able to follow working plans and prioritise accordingly. Able to work autonomously, as well as within a group and when required lead a team. Willingness to work in a dynamic environment, with collaboration across departments. Well-developed IT skills (Office 365 will be an advantage) Highly desirable skilled in materials testing techniques, such us Optical Emission Spectrometry OES, Hardness testing, Non-Destructive testing and destructive testing. Understanding of and qualifications in LEAN manufacturing Salary: The role offers a remuneration package ranging from $75,000 - $80,000 p.a plus superannuation for a 38-hour work week.
