The role As Principal Legal Officer within our Commercial and Innovation (C&I) team you’ll lead and provide expert legal services and advice across our diverse client groups. You’ll be at the forefront, advising on major projects, managing stakeholder relationships, and ensuring timely, robust outcomes that align with government objectives. As an experienced professional, you will also support the Director to drive the vision and direction of the team by motivating, mentoring, and supervising junior members to deliver on initiatives and goals, whilst striving to create an inclusive, responsive and effective team environment. You will be joining a high performing, collaborative team offering a diversity of work and a great team culture. You’ll undertake complex and sensitive matters, often working independently to deliver high-standard advisory and legislative services. Your ability to provide solutions-focused legal advice within tight timeframes will be crucial as you navigate competing stakeholder priorities and maintain up-to-date knowledge of multiple legal matters impacting the Department. If you’re ready to make a significant impact and drive positive outcomes, we want to hear from you For more information read the full Role Description : Principal Legal Officer What you will bring to the role Expertise and a depth of experience in either advisory/transactional or across one or more of the following areas: Government Procurement Commercial and contracts law Government funding and grants Technology and the law (including artificial intelligence, cyber security, data breaches) Familiarity with any of the following would be highly desirable: NSW Government Procurement Policy Framework including familiarity with the various prequalified Schemes and the ICT Framework NSW Grants Administration Guide Additionally, you will have Proven experience motivating, leading and supervising staff to support and deliver outcomes. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to prepare and deliver clear, authoritative, and practical advice Proven dispute resolution and negotiation skills and abilities to navigate complex challenges and adapt to evolving situations. Solid time management and organisational skills to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines efficiently. Resilience to persevere through obstacles and maintain productivity during challenging times. Capable of driving outcomes while effectively involving stakeholders throughout the process, fostering collaboration and buy-in. Enjoys autonomy and demonstrates proficiency in working independently, taking initiative, and making decisions. Maintains meticulous attention to detail amidst high-volume workloads, ensuring accuracy and precision in all tasks and deliverables. Essential requirements Admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW; Hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practising Certificate. A typical day in the life As a C&I lawyer, you might start the day checking your emails and having a yarn with your colleagues, followed by a coffee/tea/ hot chocolate run. Once powered up, you can expect to work on matters including procurements in goods and services, construction, ICT, or professional advisory services, advising on a funding arrangement or two, or providing advice on an inter-agency arrangement. You may expect meetings and discussions with clients or colleagues, peppered through the day. You might dedicate some time to read up on current innovation trends in the legal industry or in technology – so that you can offer ideas and suggestions as part of our “innovation” stream.
