Principal Solicitor, Advisory Legal The role The Advisory Legal team is responsible for providing expert legal support to APRA across all industries that APRA regulates. As a Principal Solicitor – Advisory Legal, you will support APRA’s mandate through being an expert advisor of choice by delivering legal advice and support that is fit for purpose, timely, meets user needs and drives outcomes. Your work will focus on your industry of specialisation (one or more of banking, superannuation or insurance). This will involve: Providing high quality, timely and practical legal advice, including advising on your area(s) of technical expertise; Supporting APRA in relation to law reform proposals; Jointly formulating strategy with stakeholders in industry aligned supervision teams across APRA on a range of complex issues that are often novel and untested; Supporting the wider Legal team in engagement with stakeholders; and Supporting continual improvement in APRA’s Advisory Legal team. As a more senior member of the team, you will also be responsible for sharing your knowledge, mentoring more junior colleagues and contributing to the wider Legal team’s workstreams and knowledge management initiatives. Other key accountabilities will be: Role-modelling APRA values (Integrity, Respect, Collaboration, Excellence and Accountability), self-awareness and innovation; Delivering high quality, practical legal advice to internal stakeholders. This should be informed by a ‘one-APRA’ mindset; Advising APRA as a body corporate in commercial contracts and relevant aspects of the Commonwealth Finance Law; Supporting managers and other colleagues in Advisory Legal in the delivery of timely, expert and outcomes oriented advice; This will entail strong technical expertise, internal (senior internal supervisors) and external stakeholder management (supervised entities and their legal advisers, peer Commonwealth agencies, external law firms and Counsel instructed by APRA); and Establishing rapport with stakeholders quickly and understanding where Advisory Legal can add value. About you You will hold a current practising certificate and have significant experience post-admission. You will have significant experience in advising in one or more of superannuation, insurance and banking. Ideally this expertise will have been obtained working in house, in a Regulator or in private legal practice. Corporate or commercial legal experience will also be highly regarded. Other key accountabilities will be: Role-modelling APRA values (Integrity, Respect, Collaboration, Excellence and Accountability), self-awareness and innovation. Either individually or as part of a team, delivering high quality, practical legal advice embodying APRA’s risk appetite to internal stakeholders. This should be informed by a ‘one-APRA’ mindset. Supporting managers and other colleagues in project managing and supporting Enforcement colleagues in the delivery of enforcement outcomes; This will entail strong project management skills, internal (senior internal supervisors) and external stakeholder management (supervised entities and their legal advisers, external law firms and Counsel instructed by APRA); Establishing rapport with stakeholders quickly and understanding where APRA Enforcement can add value.
