Mechanical Designer/Design Engineer — Edinburgh, Playford Area

The key duties of the position include The Role Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) have a position available within Research Technology and Operations (RTO) Research Engineering (RE) Branch. We are looking for a design focused Engineer or experienced technical officer to fill the role of an S&T3-4 Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Design Engineer that is responsible for the development of bespoke mechanical engineering products in support of Defence Research. The work undertaken is highly varied across application domains including land, sea, air and space. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of hardware from initial concept through to in-service use, and will contribute to design, drafting, and testing/verification activities. They will be required to develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge of design principles, fabrication techniques and standards. They will display a high level of attention to detail and be willing to contribute to all stages of product development including conceptual design, detailed drafting and prototyping/testing activities. They will be required to demonstrate initiative and the capability for innovative thought as applied to design work, and be capable of working both in a team and individual setting. Position Duties: Elicit design requirements from stakeholders, contributing suggestions and constraints from a mechanical perspective. Develop novel mechanical designs in support of Research activities occurring within a broad range of domains including aerospace, maritime and land. Apply knowledge of mechanical design principles including material selection, assembly tolerancing, limits and fits, and understanding of fabrication techniques/capabilities. Utilise CAD to develop 3D models and develop technical drawings complying with AS1100 in order to enable manufacture of mechanical systems. Consider Safety in Design during the development and modification of equipment. Identify and apply Australian or relevant Industry standards during the development of designs. Work within and support Research Engineering's established quality management system. Establish and maintain constructive relationships with staff throughout Research Engineering and wider DST/Defence. Participate in testing and verification activities to ensure equipment developed is fit-for-purpose. Our Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone with a keen interest in Mechanical Design, and a practical understanding of fabrication in order to include consideration of Design for Manufacture; both conventional and advanced techniques. They will demonstrate the attention to detail required to develop quality mechanical systems, and will also be willing to show flexibility in responding to the changing context and shifting priorities of our projects when required.
