The Legal team comprises three teams: Legal Advisory, Legal Negotiations and Investments Legal. All teams support the General Counsel. THE ROLE The Legal Counsel - Advisory role exists to provide balanced, independent and commercial advice in relation to a wide range of legal issues across all areas of our business (excluding investments, contract-negotiation and litigation matters, which are dealt with by other areas within the legal function). It also ensures that UniSuper has access to expert legal advice to a standard which is commensurate with UniSuper's position as one of Australia's leading superannuation funds. In addition to this the key focus of this role is to: research and provide legal advice in connection with superannuation law and financial services law; identify legal issues and propose solutions for consideration; review marketing materials from a legal perspective; review product disclosure statements, financial services guides, target market determinations and other disclosure documents from a legal perspective; provide legal advice and assistance in connection with any regulatory enquiries or investigations, including any internal investigations concerning incidents and breaches, breach reports to the regulators and remediations; maintain and build knowledge of changes in relevant legislation and case law; review and update policies and procedures from a legal perspective. ABOUT YOU We're looking for someone with high energy, a positive and can-do attitude as well as a passion for problem solving and creative thinking. You will also have a strong interest in being and willingness to grow as a superannuation and financial services lawyer. Furthermore, you will possess: Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with demonstrated legal research skills. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work both independently and to provide responsive assistance to colleagues. Knowledge of and experience dealing with at least some (but not necessarily all) of the key areas of law we regularly work across (including the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act, Chapter 7 of the Corporations Act, trust law, APRA prudential standards, ASIC regulatory guidance, privacy law, tax law, case law concerning these areas, among others). Legal qualifications and a current Victorian legal practising certificate. At least two years' experience in a law firm environment or in-house legal function, paired with a general knowledge of how superannuation works. A strong understanding of business concepts and operational aspects in superannuation fund administration.
